Kyoshi Derrick Williams is a living legend in the world of martial arts, but many who remain outside of his circle may not truly know why. When martial artists speak about “the old days,” they often do so with a mix of pride and quiet disbelief. Training was harder. Sparring was rougher and the standards were uncompromising. There were no shortcuts or participation trophies and very little concern for comfort. Derrick Williams came up in that era and helped define it.

Last but not least, I have to show some love to Hanshi Michael Mccalister. Hanshi Mike showed me the inner workings of Shorin Ryu Karate. He is a champion martial artist winning many tournaments on the west coast for decades. I also train in MMA from time to time, to pressure test everything I learn in a modern setting(pictured with Rafael Alves from UFC/KarateCombat). Welp that's the abridged version of my martial arts biography!

I also train in Bruce Lee's philosophical martial expression, Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Kali under the guidance and tutelage of Sifu/Guru Thomas Macaluso. He is the head instructor of Vital Point Martial Arts. Sifu Tom is certified under the legendary Guru Dan Inosanto. Sifu Tom has competed internationally and has a ton of real world experience.
