Metropolitan Tennis Group (MTG)

Metropolitan Tennis Group (MTG) NYC LGBTQ+ tennis community for fun, competitive play, tournaments, and social events. All levels welcome. 🎾🏳️‍🌈 News, 2006

Metropolitan Tennis Group (MTG) found its origins in the mid-1980s in New York City amidst a growing popularity of gay tennis. In 1985, Terry Fonville placed an ad in the Village Voice seeking other gays and lesbians interested in playing tennis together. Roughly 20 peopleresponded, and the group met monthly in what was to become the precursor to our current monthly doubles parties. Over the years, the roster grew and during the 1987-88 season, Metropolitan Tennis Group formally organized, establishing a steering committee and electing its first Board of Directors. In 1993, MTG created the Liberty Open, thereby officially joining the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) circuit. The GLTA manages and sanctions an international coalition of tennis tournaments, and with over 40 annual events, represents one of the fastest growing gay sports organizations. More than 20 years after its inception, MTG continues to expand in membership, events, and community outreach. Our members represent all reaches of the metropolitan and tri-state area. Winners revealed at MTG Goodbye to Summer Social
Wednesday, September 30 · 6–8 PM

The Next Naomi Osaka:

Naomi is known for her show-stopping court outfits - who’s her MTG counterpart? Nominate the person who has the best fashion style on courts and/or off courts.

The Most Improved Player:

You don’t hold grudges, but you remember that name who you bageled last year and then double bageled you in this summer ladder. Nominate whoever leveled up the most.

The Next Tennis Channel Commentator:

They follow all the matches - Challengers Tour? ITF25? You name it. They have the tournament calendar in their brain and spray players’ fun facts on top of eggplant lasagna at NTC Double Party.

The Best Cheerleader:

We don’t (yet) have a player box but we have those who always cheer us up. Who’s the loudest cheering voice on the sideline, who encourages you to keep playing, and who makes newcomers feel like they belong?

The Après-tennis MVP:

What makes MTG a beloved community is that we have many members that raise their hands to bring people together - who’s always organizing after-match drinks, movie nights or starting “let’s do something this weekend” group chat?

The Newcomer of the Year:

They joined MTG recently, but already feel like they’ve been here forever. Who’s the fresh face that made your tennis life more enjoyable this year? Nominate someone who joined in the past year.

You can also make up your own award -
Write a category and who should win it (full name, please) - we will pick some lovely ones to be included. Please keep categories respectful and kind.

Looking back at US Open Pride. 🌈🎾

At a time when LGBTQ+ visibility and rights are being challenged around the world, moments like this matter.

MTG was proud to stand together at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center—celebrating our community, showing up for one another, and reminding the world that we belong in tennis.

More photos from a special day at the US Open. ❤️

MTG was out at the US Open for the sixth annual Open Pride celebration 🌈🎾, a vibrant day celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, inclusion, and diversity.

A great reminder of what makes this community so special — showing up, supporting each other, and making space for everyone to enjoy the game we love.

And yes, we got a little excited seeing MTG on the big screen. 👀📺

Grateful to the US Open and the USTA for continuing to foster representation and equality both on and off the court. ❤️🌈

From now on… more tennis, more laughs, more reasons to stay for one more. 🎾🍹Another MTG Drill & Play in the books!
