Training never lies! How much effort you put into your training is clearly reflected in your skill. Congratulations to those who passed the exam. It has been my pleasure to take part in your budo journey. Let's see what you've become at the next threshold 💪

Thank you for having me back in the Tatsumaki RSR study group. You have a good group of students. Their enthusiasm fueled my energy throughout the seminar. I had a lot of fun training with you guys, and the Q and A was a riot 😆! I look forward to seeing everyone's progress and growth. Also, good luck to all those who tested. It was a proper test. You should be proud, whatever the result.

In Iai, we are not concerned with sword play. The question always remains — can you cut?

Inherent in our philosophy is an unshakable mind. An unshakable mind leads to clear thinking, effective judgment, and practical awareness.

Tameshigiri tests our mind and most of all our heart. Commitment is key. Commit to the freedom of the cut, its smooth arch, and the clarity that comes with it.

Tameshigiri was a practice made popular during the Edo period of Japan. Only the finest of swordsmen were permitted to cut through testing materials which included reed mats, tatami, and the occasional convicted criminal.

Today, tameshigiri is still practiced but exclusively to hone the skills of the martial artist. The knowledge of a kata (cut) becomes deeper when you experience how a sword cuts through reeds. Questions like how much force is necessary, or how do I create a clean angle become much clearer with this practice.

Come join us next time we perform this exciting practice!

One learns most through experience.

Practicing at our dojo requires patience, diligence, and an understanding of the practical applications for what we study. Tameshigiri — literally meaning test cut — is one of the few ways to experience the practical elements of iaido.

More often than not, we practice on our own or in front of the mirrors of the dojo with Sensei. Our cuts are reflected to us and we are encouraged to refine our technique by what we see. Though, when performing tameshigiri, we can truly feel the way a blade cuts through matter rather than just air.

Gaurav Shetty introduced Ryushin Shouchi Ryu at the Good Earth Malhar Confluence Club in Bengaluru, India. This wasn’t a planned part of the trip, but it was a wonderful surprise and an inspiring experience as a result of Ryushin Shouchi Ryu.

Ryushin Kan participated in a Gekken class at Byakkokan dojo. We thoroughly enjoyed the class and the knowledge shared by Kim Sensei and his students. You can't see it through the head gear, but we are smiling!
