Every Veteran's Day I post the same Vonnegut quote. I have nothing else clever to say this year.
I don't recognize the country I once defended...
Maybe we'll just never get it right.
---
"I will come to a time in my backwards trip when November eleventh, accidentally my birthday, was a sacred day called Armistice Day. When I was a boy, and when Dwayne Hoover was a boy, all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month."
"It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind."

This is our IG post for today. My daily laundry pile.
People ask me why I don't do more content.
I ask them why they don't have more clients 🤷♂️
The flashy social BS doesn't even begin to encompass what I do....which is, largely, boring. At least, it's boring to look at.
But in other ways, it really is something else.

Y'all met Claire? The newest massage therapist at Brooklyn Body Mechanic....maybe if you DM me, I'll give you a discount for them...but before that...
Claire (she/they) is a born and raised New Yorker with a self-described "aggressive love for bread, butter, and cheese."
But are they a good massage therapist??
They are better than good.
They are better than me in many ways.
They also managed to survive an 8-month apprenticeship with me, which is no small feat 🤣
After studying psych, linguistics, and medical ethics, they found themselves wanting a career that was more tactile and people-centered...hence massage.
Having deep, personal experiences with chronic illness, loss, and grief, they bring a myriad of skills to the table:
They are as comfortable with sports massage as they are with relaxation and somatic work.
They are collaborative, adaptable, and basically amazing.
Boom your session with Claire NOW! DM me if you need a little incentive 😬

I was going to write a post to moan more about idiotic stuff other tell clients...but here's a nice photo of me, instead.
See...I'm not always a curmudgeon.
But, seriously, we've been changing and growing here at Brooklyn Body Mechanic, so I figured some new photos were in order.
I'm Jonny. Nice to meet you. Got any questions about massage or pain management?

I miss teaching...but I like doing it my way.
Mentoring was probably the most rewarding thing I've done.
So I'll keep doing that.
Whether I'm educating other LMTs, Patients, or Biz owners, leadership is always a part of what I do.

The Brooklyn Body Mechanic team.
Claire is going to hate this, but here is an unedited shot from the small photo shoot that we FINALLY did.
In our little clinic in the basement of MFAB.
It's where the magic happens, although we ain't magicians... just massage needs.
Highly rated ones, at that.
Got some aches and pains? Give us a shot.

Same post every Veteran's Day, but Vonnegut's quote hits me different right now.
"Armstice Day is Sacred. Veteran's Day is Not"
Don't @ me if you haven't served. I've paid my dues and let me tell you: it's never a bad idea to stop slaughtering each other.
But we'll never learn that. I've let go of that hope.

Acute Pain vs. Chronic Pain. Do you know the difference?
Chronic pain and acute pain have different characteristics. Unfortunately, many folks take an overly structural approach to pain and end up treating chronic pain with the same approach as acute pain.
It's not the simple.
Acute pain usually - but not always - manifests after an injury.
In the case of chronic pain, the pain has outlived its usefulness. It is no longer an "alarm" or "warning system" to keep you safe.
With chronic pain, often there is nothing wrong, STRUCTURALLY, and a more holistic, biopsychosocial approach is needed to get relief.
If you have pain that is persisting over 3 months, you likely have a pain problem, not a structural problem.
If typical "fixes" to address injuries or trauma aren't working, you likely need a different approach.
