Some people say traditional karate is “too old” to be used for self-defense.
We disagree.
Our karate training is about being able to face whatever obstacle/opponent that stands in our way with a clear mind, focused movements and a disciplined spirit, drawing from the roots of our art.
We are proud to continue to build with our community safety partners and give New Yorkers an introduction of our karate techniques and spirit.

If this year’s Kagami Biraki training is an indication of how our training will go this year, then we’re off to a great start! Attendance was solid, energy was high, training was challenging and the food was fantastic!

I just came back to the dojo after 7 weeks. It was good to feel the energy of the dojo again and see students training hard sincerely. Thank you very much for many people’s well wishes. I got knocked out by the injury and surgery but I will get up and keep on fighting. Osu! Sensei Honma

Partnering with Personal Protective Concepts and the North Brooklyn Coalition, we are so proud to have been a part of a community self-defense workshop in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Michael Matos of Personal Protective Concepts and Sensei Honma tag teamed this hands on training which focused on situational awareness, de-escalation techniques and of course, karate for practical self-defense.

The reality of running a dojo in NYC is as challenging as any kata we practice. In training, we learn that every movement must have purpose and precision—this same principle guides how we must manage every resource we have. Operating expenses in our city continue to rise, yet we remain steadfast in our mission to keep traditional Japanese karate training accessible to our diverse community.
This is why we turn to you today. Our goal is to raise $25,000 by the end of this year to ensure we can continue providing this vital space for training and growth. While we work to build our membership, we rely on the generosity of our community – students, parents, friends, and supporters who understand the unique value of what we’re preserving here.
Your contribution, of any size, helps maintain more than just a physical space. It supports:
A tradition of excellence in karate training
A diverse community where everyone can train together
A nonprofit dojo model that prioritizes authenticity over commercialization
A space where both children and adults can grow stronger in body and spirit
Every time we bow in to begin training, we renew our commitment to the path of karatedo. Every time we bow out, we carry that training into the world. Your support helps ensure this cycle continues, allowing us to keep our doors open for all who wish to join us on this journey.

P.S. All donations are tax-deductible and will be used directly for dojo operating expenses. Help us reach our $25,000 goal by December 31st and ensure another year of strong training in 2025.

Have you noticed anything different about our kamidana? The new Shimenawa comes from Shizuoka, Japan. As you bow on and off the dojo floor this week, take a moment to appreciate the kamidana and its importance to a traditional Japanese dojo.
