There’s nothing quite like the exhilaration of a shakedown sail on a crisp Spring day with 15-18 kts and a capable crew. And all systems are GO!

Great sail back to Westbrook on a crisp Fall day! Found on board this awesome custom plaque commemorating our Halifax Race. Was left for us by crew member CDR Sung. Love it even though it looks vaguely like a tombstone!

The Rover nav station has state-of-the-art navigational and routing electronics. We even have on board a sextant for celestial navigation.

But centuries earlier the Polynesians were navigating by “wayfinding”. The newly opened Michael C. Rockefeller Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has an Art of Oceania exhibit showcasing this Rebbilib, an ancient navigational chart.

“Austronesian-speaking voyagers began to settle the islands of the northern Pacific between 3,500 and 5,000 years ago. Master navigators, they attuned themselves to the atmosphere, observing ocean currents, wind and cloud patterns, and the migratory habits of birds. At night they mapped the constellations, creating star-paths to guide their oceangoing canoes. Wayfinding was a chiefly pursuit in the Marshall Islands, and men were instructed in the art of navigation, aided by schematic charts like the one on view here. The rebbilib’s complex, intersecting lines depict ocean swells and the direction of waves that routinely deflect off island coastlines.”
