Another notable report from Jack Curry last night was that, while he doesn't see the Yankees getting involved in any trade talks for Nolan Arenado, they could try and acquire Cody Bellinger from the Cubs.
Bellinger will be entering his age 29 season next year with two-years/$52M remaining on his deal. He is coming off a solid 2024 with Chicago putting up a .751 OPS with 18 home runs over 130 games.
I don't love the money he's making (about $26M per year for the next two seasons) but this honestly might be a perfect fit. First of all he would be our leadoff hitter which is quite an under-discussed problem at the current moment. It's either Jazz or Volpe right now which is not the way to go (for various reasons).
Generally, Bellinger wouldn't be an obvious candidate to lead off (OBP was just .325 in 2024), but if the Yankees were to acquire him then slotting him at the top (if Soto is re-signed) will be a no-brainer given the alternatives. Also he has struck out at just a 15.6% rate since being a Cub the last two seasons which is awesome.
Lefty bat who plays a very strong centerfield AND first base. Hit .283/.347/.451 (.797 OPS) away from Wrigley. Also the 18 home runs he hit would have been around 26 home runs had he played at Yankee Stadium (per Baseball Savant).
I'm kinda all for this.

The Yankees could also go internal at first base by giving Ben Rice a chance to win the job in camp.
This would mean no Christian Walker who has been at the top of my and many’s offseason wishlist after Soto (and Roki Sasaki).
Walker makes too much sense as long as it’s no more than a three year deal with him turning 34 next season.
But if the Yankees were to add a legitimate IMPACT bat, in addition to bringing Soto back, at another position instead of 1B then I’m all for giving Rice a chance to win the job (as I always was until the World Series embarrassment).
The bottom line is we need to IMPROVE and that obviously goes way beyond retaining a player you already had. But as long as they do and let’s say it’s not via signing Christian Walker — I do like Ben Rice a lot.

With the Dodgers signing Korean infielder Hyesong Kim (not to be confused with HA-Seong Kim who remains a free agent), they are expected to trade second baseman Gavin Lux.
Lux, a former first-round draft pick, has yet to reach his full upside offensively and has also struggled defensively to a degree (more so at shortstop).
However, the 27-year-old slashed .304/.391/.508 (.899 OPS) over 61 games in the 2nd half of the season which is obviously promising. He is under control through 2026.
Wouldn’t love it. Wouldn’t hate it. Lux can’t really hit lefties, is not great defensively, and until a full breakout is seen you have to consider his bat league average at best.
At this point though, with my concerns over the Yankees not adding another infielder period, I’d certainly take it. And early reports suggest they do indeed have interest. But this is just speculation for now

The Yankees have no plans of pursuing free agents Anthony Rizzo and Gleyber Torres, per Jack Curry.

Gotta get Soto back obviously but there’s so much to do after that. 1st and 2nd base are both currently vacant. They could fill those holes internally but that’d be quite a bold decision after losing the WS.
Gotta sign Christian Walker to play first. Most obvious free agent signing ever. Get that done and Caleb Durbin breaking camp as the 2B is fine.
Consider trading Jasson for a high end starter if the we’re not 100% committed to him as an everyday outfielder. Then sign Teoscar Hernandez if you have any balls.
Bullpen has to be upgraded. Still no idea who’s leading off. A lot more to do than just Soto. Have to win it all next year

NEWS: Dave Sims is close to signing a deal with WFAN to replace the legendary John Sterling as the Yankees’ radio play-by-play broadcaster.
Many of you will know Sims from his work with the Seattle Mariners on television. And if you don’t… lets just say we’re in good hands.
Nothing official just yet but this is about as good a replacement as you could get!

MEETING UPDATE: Juan Soto’s meeting with the Yankees went “very well”, per Jon Heyman.
However, no team including the Yankees is believed to have made a formal offer as of yet. Any report that the Mets have offered him $660M are FALSE.
FYI: Jon Heyman is very close with Scott Boras and is typically very reliable when it comes to reports involving his clients.
