Folks don't like to see two guys do a lot of clinching. I could look back over my amateur career and see mistakes I made. One hard right had dropped Max Marek in the first round of the 1933 National AAU light heavyweight championship scrap at Boston. But I let him get up and keep rushing me off balance the rest of the way and take down the decision in a close bout. Maybe if I'd known about this balance stuff back then, I'd have kept him down by pouring in a hailstorm of gloves. I guess I just wasn't a good finisher then.'

'I got my start in an anti-poverty program in 1965; how could I sit back with a fat million dollars in the bank and look out for myself and see a lot of young people in the country just sinking down? There are kids smoking stuff out of pipes, and their heroes are out there doing it themselves. Maybe I can provoke some of these other athletes who are making $10 million or $5 million to do something. Having enough is not enough.'
