It's with a heavy heart to report the passing of John Bate.
This notorious, legendary guy always brought a sense of fun to classes and would tell us that he was famous for, ''…screwing up the choreography.'' But he was also a professional librarian of musicals, film and theater facts. AND, he would recall stories of he and taking the subway back to Brooklyn together after Luigi's class, of immediately loving in class, and how stern looked doing Luigi's work!
I first met John at Luigi's Jazz Centre after moving to NYC
48 years ago and we became acquaintances then friends. After Luigi passed I would have John in my weekly classes 3 - 6 times for the past decade! He continued to boast that he started taking Luigi's classes in 1960 and still hadn't graduated!
A couple of weekends ago John danced Luigi's choreography with us to ''Just In Time'' in my Saturday 11am Style Class -
I knew he loved that piece. A few days later he had a stroke.
Just this past January we had his 86th birthday celebration at the studio and John received a lot of homemade cookies from the students because he made it known that he liked to have a few each day…

We Miss You John but know that you are dancing again with our maestro Luigi.
