part 2 in our 3-part “arthritic athlete” series is 8/2, this time focusing on the shoulder with !

degenerative arthritis is the leading cause of joint replacements. osteoarthritis creates many compensatory patterns that can lead to asymmetries in movement + posture. these patterns can lead to many pathologies: back pain, poor shoulder biomechanics, neck pain + even increased lateral curvature of the spine. many who have OA are athletic and highly functional and want to wait for a joint replacement surgery until the timing is right for them. dive into programming for the arthritic shoulder in this workshop— exercises designed to address misalignment and functionality will be covered on the mat, reformer + chair. these exercises will support your client in their desire to “stay vertical,” active + balanced.

fri, 8/2: 1-5pm EST // $180 // 4 KS CECs // in-person + virtual

foot + ankle is our focus for july! the talus, one of the 28 bones in each of our feet + located in the rearfoot, is crucial to the anatomy of both the foot + ankle as it is part of the subtalar and transverse tarsal joints (foot) and, along with the tibia and fibula, makes up the talocrural joint (ankle). these joints give us tons of movement options in our feet and ankles — notably, the subtalar (calcaneus + talus) joint mobility gives the foot freedom to move independent of the leg, so when we walk on uneven terrain, our foot can adjust without major adjustment up the chain. dive deeper in our student lecture series + mods of the month, coming up with judy thurau!

tues, 7/16:
SLS: 5-6pm (in-person + virtual—free!)
equipment masterclass: 7-8pm ($40, student class cards accepted)!

our S.I. joint — sacroiliac joint — is a major player in transitioning the load from our trunk to our pelvis and lower body, and can easily become irritated. one of our go-to assessments looks at the mechanics of the hip: how is the femur dropping + gliding well in the socket, in all directions? we also look at the pelvis, specifically the iliums: are they rotated? hiked? overly flexed or tilted? these questions help us understand how to help improve the function the lumbopelvic region + take any undue stress off the S.I. joints. explore with us this month in our mods and PT to pilates, as well as our SLS + masterclass w/ !

・repost・
“I wanted to talk about my experience with this article and my perspective. A huge part of my “why” is learning how to take care of the body, mine and everybody else’s. The curiosity never stopped. Every persons experience of pain, limitations and available movement are so diverse.

When I took Irene Dowd’s anatomy lecture in 2000, I thought it would come naturally having danced since I was 5. It did not. I remember confusing anterior and posterior pelvis. I was so embarrassed, so I took a break and continued on with my dance career.

As a yoga teacher and professional modern dancer, I kept seeing the same injuries and was also training for 8-10 hrs a day. I knew if I wanted to understand more for my own injuries and be a better teacher, I needed to go back to anatomy. Seeing where everything connected gave me a better sense of scale, muscle location and depth and cueing. What I parroted back from others for years became a path of enlightenment forward.

When I was shadowing at HSS in ortho, the pts were all surprised that I was starting my pilates mat training. Now I feel like most physical and occupational therapists talk about doing these trainings, but 10 yrs ago the line was more divisive. This was part of the reason I chose OT over PT. I wanted to treat holistically and focus on function and ADLs.

I had a great job as a wellness coordinator after retiring (mostly) from the stage, but I knew I really wanted to help people move and feel better. When the comments in this article said they didn’t want a yoga teacher dissecting them, it upset me that cadaver labs were viewed as casual learning environments. It is a sacred endeavor.

When I did the Fami program at Mount Sinai, this in person lab was life changing. I learned from that moment that my passion for the body would override any fear I had about going back to school, and becoming a beginner again. I am now a therapist who gets to work where this all started.

Learning is a constant when you work with people and I’m so grateful for this and my journey from teacher to OT. Thanks for including me in your article ”

💥starting today💥
- tues, 8am-12pm
- wed, 8-10am
- sun, 9am-1pm; equipment class at 9am!

✨ Bailey Anglin discovered Pilates early in her career as a professional dancer. She pursued her Pilates training and education through the Kane School and has been teaching at Westside Dance PT since 2018. Pilates has given Bailey the opportunity to focus on her passion for functional biomechanics of the human body. Her classes + sessions will help participants with overall alignment while increasing joint stability, strength, tone, and elongation of muscles. Participants will identify and find ways to release unnecessary tension through the integration of breath, while giving the body the tools to move through space efficiently. Through her invigorating classes, Bailey hopes to help her students release daily stress, heighten senses, and embrace healthy bodies in motion.

happy may — shoulder month here at kinected! did you know that both heads of the biceps work together to prevent dislocation in the shoulder? the short head helps prevent downward dislocation + lifts the humerus relative to the scapula, and the long head presses the humeral head against the glenoid cavity, esp during abduction. next up in our kinectED line-up: the arthritic knee with !
fri, 5/17: 2-6pm // $180 // 4 CECs // in-person + virtual

degenerative arthritis is the leading cause of joint replacements. osteoarthritis creates many compensatory patterns that can lead to asymmetries in the kinetic chain. these patterns can then lead to many pathologies, back pain, poor hip biomechanics, SI joint pain and even increased lateral curvature of the spine. many clients that have OA are athletic and highly functional and want to wait for joint replacement surgery until the timing is right for them. join studio director matt mcculloch as he breaks down the programming for the arthritic knee. exercises designed to address misalignment and functionality will be covered on the mat, reformer and chair. these exercises will support your client in their desire to “stay vertical” and active and balanced. this is the first workshop in a 3 part series “the Arthritic Athlete.”

“The Kane School has given me the gift of returning to a beginner’s mind - both physically and mentally. After 16 years performing on Broadway, my body has all sorts of learned patterns, and as I moved through a recent show injury while training for a half marathon, I have been obsessed with the way in which Pilates allows you to slow down and connect the mind and body to facilitate deeper somatic understanding. As a yoga teacher and practitioner, this practice has given me an entirely new perspective on how to cue, breathe and be in the shapes I have been practicing for years. I love the balance and the potential for healing Pilates provides and am so grateful to have discovered this new path!“

this month we’re focusing on the hip! in our pilates mat certification, hip differentiation is one of our 9 core principles. part of this principle is knowing how and where the femoral head scoops in flexion, extension, abduction and addiction—and when it scoops well in all of these actions, the pelvic half can remain stable and the SI and the joints of the lumbar spine do not overmobilize. learn more about the anatomy, function + pathologies of the hip in our student lecture series + accompanying masterclass with !
