"Way of Life Through Humility and Strength"
Kyokushin Karate is not a game or a show demonstration. Martial Art is a way of life that trains you to be peaceful and kind. If conflict is taken place and no other choice but to confront the aggressor, Karate dictates taking him down with a single blow. This requires strength, speed, determination. Physical aspect is only part of the practice, a phase

"Way of Life Through Humility and Strength" Kyokushin Karate is not a game or a show demonstration. Martial Art is a way of life that trains you to be peaceful and kind. If conflict is taken place and no other choice but to confront the aggressor, Karate dictates taking him down with a single blow. This requires strength, speed, determination. Physical aspect is only part of the practice, a phase of the action, not the essence of Martial Art. True karate is based on the body, mind and spirit. All must be developed simultaneously, in harmony. During Kumite and Kata practice, we learn to do our movements. We learn to perform the techniques. We learn to remain focused, concentrate on any one thing. In essence, we learn about us. This harmonious unity of mind and body is powerful. The most physical strength and skill are no match when you embrace the power of wholeness. The result of Martial Art practice is natural: confidence, humility, mind openness and peace reside in you through perfect unity of mind and body. This is the core teaching at Sassi Karate Center, our philosophy lead to a "Way of Life Through Humility and Strength"

The Spirit of Osu

押忍の精神
Osu is the one word that you'll hear the most in a Kyokushin dojo or at a Kyokushin tournament. When you enter or leave the dojo, you bow and say "Osu". When you greet a fellow Kyokushin Karateka 空手家, you say "Osu" instead of "hello". When you respond to an instruction or question in class, you say "Osu" instead of "yes" or "I understand". When performing Kihon Waza 基本技 (basic techniques) in class, each technique is often accompanied with a loud "Osu". When practicing Jiyu Kumite 自由組手 (free fighting) in class and your opponent lands a good, hard technique, you say "Osu" to acknowledge your opponent's skill. As a measure of respect, knockdown fighters at a tournament bow and say "Osu" to the front, to the referee and to each other, before and after the fight. Osu is used in many situations and seems to mean a lot of things. But what does it really mean?

Osu is a contraction of the words:

押し Oshi meaning "Push"

忍ぶ Shinobu meaning "to Endure"

It means patience, determination and perseverance. Every time we say "Osu", we remind ourselves of this.
