The Taoist Arts Center New York began in 1990 out of a long term commitment to the internal arts. Our students come from all walks of life. Come by check us out!

We look forward to seeing you at our East Village location or online in our public or private classes. Founded in 1990, the Taoist Arts Center grew from a lifelong love of the internal arts and a wish to create a welcoming space where people can learn, share, and grow through Tai Chi, Chi Kung (qigong), and Meditation.

Gong Hay Fat Choy! Happy Lunar New Year

February 17th welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse: A year of energy, passion, and momentum, favoring action over hesitation and bold moves over playing it safe.

The Horse symbolizes agility, confidence, and success. Respect its power and it will carry you forward; ignore it and expect resistance. Expect rapid change, fresh starts, and forward motion in 2026 as old systems fall away and new ones emerge.

Whether you’re a Horse or simply riding the wave, this year promises excitement, courage, and growth.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and successful Year of the Fire Horse!

Happy Year of the Wood Dragon from the Taoist Arts Center! This Lunar New Year begins February 10, 2024.

The Dragon is a majestic and lucky creature in Chinese culture symbolizing bravery, creativity and innovation. In ancient times Dragons stood for the divine power of the emperor and his supernatural abilities. Today Dragons are the ultimate symbol of strength and courage, embodying luck, vitality and enthusiasm.

Dragon years are known for good fortune, unpredictability and excitement. These mystical creatures that live in the sky represent the yang energy of the universe. They are the epitome of creativity, power and prosperity. Due to their enhanced energy and action Dragon years are an excellent opportunity for problem solvers, visionary leaders and innovators.

People born in Dragon years are irrepressible free spirits who live unpredictable lives. These creative and flamboyant individuals are innovative, enterprising, passionately brave people who are confident in the face of adversity. They make excellent artists, inventors, philosophers, engineers, psychoanalysts, politicians, actors and musicians. Those born in the year of the Wood Dragon are particularly creative, ambitious, optimistic and adventurous. They like to explore new ideas and challenge themselves. They are generous, compassionate and loyal to their friends. As individuals who enjoy being in the spotlight, they can be quick-tempered and conceited. Watch out for their tempers, or pay the price.

Dragon people are generally healthy individuals who like to burn the candle at both ends. Unfortunately, they can use up their abundant energy, have emotional outbursts and suffer from occasional ill health. These problems can be remedied by initiating a calming routine in their daily lives that soothes the mind and spirit while rejuvenating the body.

Internal Martial Artists will find the Year of the Dragon particularly auspicious. Dragon years encourage the cultivation of internal energy, flexibility, circular movement and subtle strength; qualities that symbolically reflect the Dragon's fluidity and potent force. The Dragon's emphasis on internal strength, aligns with its energetic connection to spiritual development and self-awareness. For those practicing Tai Chi, Chi Kung or Meditation, this focus on smooth flow of Chi provides a unique opportunity for growth and transformation.

Utilizing the energy of the Dragon helps internal martial artists deepen their awareness of the Taoist philosophies that drive their practice and encourages growth in martial skills, mental fortitude and spiritual insight. Embracing the Dragon’s qualities can help them understand the deeper purpose of their training, inspire them to set higher practice goals and improve mental discipline.
