1οΈβ£ Have you tried telling your overwhelmed child how to cope in the heat of a meltdown??? ππΌββοΈ
2οΈβ£ Perhaps youβve said:
βTake a deep breath.β
βYou need to calm down. β
3οΈβ£ Whilst your first instinct is to nurture & talk, it actually escalates the meltdown & doesnβt help your autistic or ADHD child cope.
4οΈβ£ Limit the amount & type of input that youβre asking them to process during a meltdown.
5οΈβ£ Processing language is difficult during a meltdown. But visual processing is a strength.
6οΈβ£ So STOP TALKING during a meltdown!
7οΈβ£ Try SHOWING & MODELING the coping skills that you want your child to engage in during the meltdown.
8οΈβ£ This is so much more powerful than telling them how to calm down. Try it and let me know how it goes!

FYI - this advice is SO hard to follow but it is very powerful in the meltdown moment!
Try it & see!
