Silver lining to being at home all day, every day.. By now I think we’ve all seen the huge increase in ability to participate in ONLINE FITNESS AND MOVEMENT CLASSES., many of which are generously free or donation based. It is not the same, but there are so many benefits to working this way.
- we can take multiple classes per day, every day. Something that would just not happen if we were living our usual busy lives. - we can really focus on doing what our bodies need in any given class without the pressure to do exactly what the instructor is doing. Less chance to hurt ourselves (but watch out for furniture!)
- We have so much more time to work on fixing those imbalances in our musculoskeletal systems. In other words, those PT exercises that you know you should be doing but really aren’t, well there’s plenty of time to take care of that now. When we come out of this and get back to normal we can be healthier than ever from a chronic injury standpoint and we will hit the ground running!
- we get to try just about any type of class we’re curious about — strength training, ballet barre, yoga, Pilates, African dance, qi gong... the list goes on. The digital world is at our fingertips! We can be seen or not seen and do what we can. Do what we feel.
DM me if you’re interested in ways in which we can work together online during this pandemic crisis. My website has tons of info about me and the link is in my bio.
Let’s tackle this together!

Do NOT habitually carry your bag/purse/briefcase on the same shoulder or in the same hand. You will create head/neck/shoulder/back problems that, left unchecked, you will not be able to fix. (Seeing some pretty crooked people walking around.)
- try a good backpack for your body
- try a crossbody bag and alternate sides often
- hold two smaller bags in your hands sometimes and walk tall with good posture
- be aware of your posture and gait as much as possible and adjust it as necessary
- do more back exercises (extension) in the gym than chest exercises (flexion)

Not trying to shame Trey Anastasio or anything but just showing his inspiring evolution with a before and after. Congratulations to him, to us. When you put in the effort with some consistency, it will pay off. We can look and feel even better in our 50s than we did in our 30s or 40s.

Thoracic (upper back) mobility is so important and really lacking in so many of us. Do these foam roller stretches before you workout and save your shoulders. Rotator cuff problems are highly correlated with limited thoracic range of motion if not a result of trauma. The second part of the video with the twist shows a great lat stretch. Take more time than I did here to melt into each of these movements.

Throw back...wait, Woman crush...no, wait. - That’s it! Anywow, get a smaller waist by doing small-range, slow, focused crunches where your belly gets MORE narrow as you crunch up and it doesn’t punch out. Drawing your navel into your spine for the entire set will work the endurance of your deep core muscles like the Transversus Abdominus (TVA) - which is how they are primarily meant to be used AND will act as a natural muscle girdle.
