Meet Coach Carl Asker:
Carl has been part of the SquashRx community in New Canaan for over a decade, and this fall he joins us for the first time as a coach! With his unique background in racket sports and endurance training, we are excited to welcome Carl to the New Canaan team!
Check out our Q&A with Carl below, and visit squashrx.com or click the link in bio for all our upcoming Fall Clinics.
Q&A
Q: Where are you from originally, and how did you get into squash?
I grew up in Sweden and moved to the U.S. in 1992. I’ve played racket sports my whole life—starting with tennis and then competitive badminton. I discovered squash and began training more seriously after moving to the East Coast and connecting with SquashRx over a decade ago.
Q: What’s your coaching philosophy?
I’m passionate about form, technique, and helping athletes of all levels build a strong foundation. Pedagogy is really important to me. I do not believe in just commanding students to do things—I want to draw out their enthusiasm and help them connect with the game. Everyone learns differently, so I adapt my cues to the individual. Squash, to me, should look beautiful. The art of the game matters. That’s what I try to pass on to the people I coach.
Q: What unique experience do you bring to the court?
I’ve completed four Ironmans and North America’s first 200-mile trail ultramarathon. I was also selected three times for the world’s toughest race, the Barkley Marathons. That mindset of grit, endurance, and learning is always incorporated on some level in my coaching and training.
Q: Who will you be working with?
I’ll be coaching both juniors and adults. I’m especially focused on fitness, conditioning, and helping new or returning players improve their technique and confidence on the court.
Q: As a parent yourself, how does that influence your coaching?
I have three kids—my youngest is 19—so I really understand how children develop as athletes and respond at different ages. I’ve coached summer camps and seen how kids absorb instruction differently, and how important it is to be dynamic with each child.
