Today we celebrate the birthday of Steve “Mongo” McMichael, one of the most distinctive personalities to cross from professional football into professional wrestling.

Before entering the wrestling business, McMichael built an accomplished NFL career and became best known as a key member of the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears defense. His intensity, toughness and larger-than-life personality eventually made the transition to wrestling feel natural.

McMichael joined WCW in the mid-1990s, first as a commentator before becoming an active competitor. He quickly became part of the Four Horsemen alongside Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit, giving the group a unique presence that blended legitimate athletic credibility with the chaotic personality that defined “Mongo.”

Although his wrestling career was relatively brief compared with many of his contemporaries, McMichael became a memorable part of WCW during one of the company’s most important eras. His charisma, unpredictability and physical presence made him stand out from the moment he entered the ring.

On October 17, 2016, Goldberg made his long-awaited return to WWE, appearing on Raw for the first time in more than twelve years.

The return came after Paul Heyman had challenged Goldberg on behalf of Brock Lesnar, reigniting a rivalry that had last been seen at WrestleMania XX in 2004. When Goldberg finally walked through the entranceway again, the reaction made it clear that his connection with the audience had never disappeared.

In an emotional in-ring promo, Goldberg accepted Lesnar’s challenge and confirmed that he was ready to compete again. What initially appeared to be a one-match comeback quickly became the beginning of a major second chapter in his WWE career.

Goldberg would go on to defeat Brock Lesnar in shocking fashion at Survivor Series, return to the Royal Rumble, and eventually capture the Universal Championship.

On October 17, 1999, Chyna made history at WWF No Mercy by defeating Jeff Jarrett to capture the Intercontinental Championship.

The match was contested under “Good Housekeeping” rules, a stipulation filled with household objects and weapons that reflected the increasingly chaotic style of the Attitude Era. Despite the gimmick-heavy presentation, the result became one of the most significant championship moments of the period.

With the victory, Chyna became the first woman in WWF history to win the Intercontinental Championship, breaking a barrier that had existed for decades and further establishing herself as one of the company’s most unique and dominant performers.

The match also marked the end of Jeff Jarrett’s WWF run at the time, as he departed the company immediately afterward.

On October 17, 1999, WWF No Mercy featured a match that would change tag-team wrestling forever when The Hardy Boyz faced Edge & Christian in the first-ever tag-team Ladder Match.

The bout was the final match of the Terri Invitational Tournament, with $100,000 and the managerial services of Terri Runnels suspended above the ring. What followed was a chaotic display of athleticism, risk-taking and creativity unlike anything previously seen in a WWF tag-team match.

Matt and Jeff Hardy ultimately won the match, but all four men emerged as stars. The chemistry between the two teams, combined with increasingly dangerous ladder spots, immediately captured the attention of the audience and established both duos as major parts of WWF’s rapidly evolving tag-team division.

The match also became the foundation for an era that would soon include the Dudley Boyz and lead to the legendary Triangle Ladder Match and TLC matches that defined tag-team wrestling during the Attitude Era.

Today we remember Stu Hart, one of the most important patriarchs in professional wrestling history and the foundation of one of the industry’s most influential families.

Born in 1915, Hart became a respected wrestler, promoter and trainer whose impact reached far beyond his own in-ring career. In Calgary, he built Stampede Wrestling into one of Canada’s most important promotions, creating a platform for generations of wrestlers from Canada and around the world.

His greatest legacy, however, may be the legendary Hart Dungeon. Inside the basement of the Hart family home, Stu trained and tested countless wrestlers, developing a reputation for his demanding methods, deep knowledge of holds and uncompromising standards. The Dungeon became one of wrestling’s most famous training grounds.

As the patriarch of the Hart family, Stu also helped shape the careers of his sons Bret and Owen Hart, while his influence extended through an entire wrestling dynasty that included performers, promoters and future generations connected to the family.

Stu Hart passed away in 2003 at the age of 88.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Kenny Omega, one of the most influential and accomplished professional wrestlers of his generation.

Known for his explosive athleticism, dramatic match structure and willingness to push professional wrestling in new directions, Omega built his reputation through standout runs in Japan and North America. His time in New Japan Pro-Wrestling made him an international star, where he became the IWGP Heavyweight Champion and produced a series of matches that helped redefine expectations for modern main-event wrestling.

Omega later became one of the central figures in the formation and rise of All Elite Wrestling, where he added another major world championship to his résumé and continued to deliver high-profile performances against some of the best wrestlers in the industry.

Across multiple promotions, countries and eras, Kenny Omega has built a career defined by ambition, innovation and a constant desire to make every match feel different.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Nikolai Volkoff, one of the most recognizable foreign villains in professional wrestling history.

Born Josip Hrvoje Peruzović in 1947, Volkoff built a career that spanned several decades and became especially famous during the WWF’s national expansion in the 1980s. With his Soviet-inspired character, red attire and traditional pre-match rendition of the Soviet national anthem, he became one of the era’s most effective heels.

Volkoff is perhaps best remembered for his partnership with The Iron Sheik. Managed by Freddie Blassie, the duo defeated Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo at the first WrestleMania in 1985 to capture the WWF Tag Team Championship, forever linking Volkoff to one of the most historically significant events in wrestling history.

Although best known as a villain, Volkoff later showed a different side of his character, including a babyface run in which he openly embraced the United States and distanced himself from the Soviet persona that had defined much of his career.

His longevity, unmistakable presentation and ability to generate strong reactions from audiences made him one of the most memorable characters of his generation. In 2005, his contributions to the business were recognized with induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.
