A wide variety of techniques are used: strikes, throws, joint locks, foot sweeps, pins, chokes, projections, pressure points with the object being to control the attacker and pu

This is Lili, one of our newest students. She has been training for less than three months, but she is making great progress! Here she uses a shoulder throw as a defense against a grab from behind. Though this was her first time practicing this technique, she was able to do some of the important aspects of it -- bending her knees, turning rather than leaning forward, and getting her balance immediately after executing the throw -- really well. Anton came to us with no prior martial arts training, but with a lot of spirit and natural athleticism, and a willingness to try anything. Here he is doing some basics on his recent green belt test. Note how when he struggled a bit on the third technique, he immediately used a strike when to keep his uke busy while he was figuring it out. Note, too, that spiffy sweep at the end. Anton deserved his green belt, and we look forward to watching his future progress.

This is Manny, who tested for green belt in Eizan Ryu last weekend, doing some basics from grabs and punches. Manny came to our dojo with an extensive BJJ background, and has been a really excellent addition to the dojo -- attentive, willing to try new things, and able to work with anyone, from our newest white belts to our black belts. He has a good eye for details, and we look forward to watching his progress to brown belt, and beyond.

Have you seen this technique before? Frankly, I have not. 😂These yellow belts were testing for green belt this past weekend, and we usually ask students testing at that level to defend against a couple of attacks they have not yet been shown any techniques for in class, just to see what they will come up with. This is what you get when you have a big, athletic, enthusiastic green belt candidate improvising a defense against a headlock done by a fearless but not very large black belt. It worked, and it was epic.

The time one spends in yellow belt in Eizan Ryu Jujitsu is a period for getting the general shape of the art -- learning a few throws, some more joint locks, how to integrate strikes into techniques, the basics of off balance and footwork, and -- very importantly -- how to fall safely. It is a beginner rank, yes, but progress is quick during that time. For the next rank, green belt, the student will need to be able to work against more serious attacks and make their techniques more fluid. The journey is endless.

It is good to have options. Sometimes, the thing you try to do does not work, and you need to change your approach. That is why we teach our students switch ups from all our basic techniques. In martial arts -- and in life in general -- one wants the kind of awareness, fluidity, and confidence that turns difficulties into opportunities. This kind of training helps with that.
