It’s my first day of school!

My mom used to take pictures of my brother and I on our first days of school. Even for a masters degree, I think the tradition still holds.

Officially announcing a social worker in the making. For the next 16 months, I’ll be in the care of Tulane University’s School of Social Work (), all online. I’ll be writing, reading, thinking and dreaming about serving people and communities while making big plans for Jeff Version 33.0.

I’m still teaching all of my yoga classes for and as well as co-leading a very cool teacher training for with .

Big thanks to and for writing me letters that made me out to seem worthy of such a big next step. And to all the people who think that I can do it.

Wish me luck! I’ll be a busy boy.

Pride didn’t come naturally to me. And often times, it still doesn’t. It is a constant, daily practice to break old patterns of thinking, inherent biases and outdated concepts of self and others. As my wise teacher said, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc., are not a simple “I am” or “I’m not.” Even as I embrace myself more fully, I find little bits of internalized homophobia, tucked in a corner, hidden by the media, careless conversations, social media comments, etc. The work to dismantle white supremacy, racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, fat phobia, islamophobia, prejudice of ALL KINDS is a daily practice of having tender conversations, exercising deep listening (without speaking), owning mistakes and inherent biases, calling out injustice, enduring hard moments, and most importantly, showing an unwillingness to give up when the ugly truths show themselves. If we all do the work, we plant the seeds for vibrant communities for our future generations. I want to be on this journey with you. The work is about actively opposing hate, no matter what shape it morphs into.

This shirt means a lot to me. It represents a place where I’m proud to work. It represents a place that is donating thousands of dollars to . It represents a studio where monthly classes are held to benefit . Most importantly, it’s a place where people can grow in celebration of their skin, their love, their body, and their spirit, no matter what.

Swipe right grab your pride shirt, and know that your money goes to . Tag me in a photo of you wearing it. I know you’ll feel as good in it as I do. @ Yogamaya
