We carry a lot of rock and jazz, among other kinds of music, at Westsider Records, but we did start life as a classical store two generations ago, and we still carry a lot of it. Back in 1955, a Canadian pianist named Glenn Gould (1932-1982) burst on the recording scene with a record of Bach's Goldberg Variations that has endured across nearly 70 years as one of the definitive documents of the work. Over the decades, it's been reissued in other formats, even in fake stereo (and Sony in Japan even did an audiophile CD issue of the fake stereo version about 20 years ago), and Gould closed out his career with a new recording of the work in 1979. Vinyl originals of the 1956 issue in very good condition still sell fast, and at healthy prices, but now Sony Classical has released an audiophile-quality 2024 LP edition of Gould's original Goldberg Variations, and we've got it.
