Filmmaking is an important part of Manhattan Youth’s SONYC After-School Program, which serves more than 5000 students in over 20 middle schools throughout New York City.
Our programs are funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) as part of the Comprehensive After-School System of NYC. In 2014, Mayor De Blasio expanded DYCD funding to ensure that every middle school student in NYC has access to enriching programs after school, including sports, arts, literacy, STEM and leadership development.
This funding allows us to provide programs such as the Manhattan Youth Film Intensives to middle school students across the city completely free of charge.

“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
Today, we are reminded of the sacrifices of Dr. King Jr. and the legacy his work has left on our country. On this day, it is the mission of all to act in service of others. To be kind. To be welcoming. To be a community as one, no matter your race, creed or the color of your skin.
In these trying times, when searching for purpose, we are inspired by Dr. King's words and we will continue to do the work that brings us together and lifts each other up.

In honor of this year's Lights on Afterschool event, join us for an Interactive American Sign Language (ASL) Workshop on Thursday, October 26th, 2023 from 5:45-6:45pm at Battery Park City School.
Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities.
The Afterschool Alliance draws attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do, and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.
