The Armory is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George Kochman, a legend in the Staten Island track and field community. George made his mark as an athlete, coach, and reporter over the course of his many decades in the sport.
George grew up in New Jersey before going on to attend Georgetown University, where he ran track. He began his coaching career at St. Joseph's HS, before becoming the head coach at Monsignor Farrell in 1968. In his 12 years at Farrell, the Lions won 32 Staten Island titles, and his 1973 two mile relay team won the Championship of America at the Penn Relays. Following his tenure at Farrell, George coached at Wagner College for six years.
At the conclusion of his coaching career, George remained deeply involved with the sport, reporting on high school and local races for both the Staten Island Advance and SI Live. His career as a sportswriter spanned 37 years, covering races, spotlighting local runners, compiling calendars, and more.
In 2015, George was honored by The Armory as a recipient of the Stan Saplin Award, alongside his close friend Derek Alvez. This award is presented annually to members of the media who have made significant contributions to the sport of track and field.
George is survived by his wife Rosemary, their five children, and four grandchildren. A member of the CHSAA Hall of Fame, he will be greatly missed by the entire community.

Today, The Armory Foundation honors the life of our beloved founder, Dr. Norbert W. Sander Jr, on what would have been his 82nd birthday. Dr. Sander's extraordinary vision built this facility into a world-class destination for athletes and a gathering place for the community. His memory inspires us all to be better each and every day.
Did you know that Dr. Sander is the only NYC male resident to ever win the NYC marathon, doing so in 1974?

A huge congratulations to NYC native Salif Mane, who is headed to Paris after winning the triple jump competition at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a PR of 17.52m on his final attempt.🥇🙌
Not only was Salif a regular competitor on The Armory Track and trained at The Armory each winter, but Salif was a 2019 graduate of the after-school Armory College Prep educational program. Available at no charge to athletes who train at The Armory, this year-round educational program makes college a reality for every participant. Learn more at www.armory.nyc
Salif is the third male athlete to win triple jump titles at both the NCAA Outdoor Championships and Olympic Trials in the same year.
Salif attended Taft Educational Campus in The Bronx, where he became the 2019 New York state champion in the triple jump working with the influential NYC Coach Marella Richardson.
On the track and off the track, all of us at The Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory are so proud of Salif and we are looking forward to watching him in Paris!🥐🇫🇷
