Robert Ripley...cartoonist and creator/founder of Ripleys Believe it or Not. Throughout the 1920s, Ripley continued to broaden the scope of his work and his popularity increased greatly. He published a guide to the game of handball in 1925. In 1926, he became the New York State handball champion.

Playground Three Forty gets its name from its location on 3rd Avenue and 40th Street. The city purchased the land in 1958 in order to provide a playground for the adjoining J.H.S. 136, the Charles O. Dewey School.
