In the US Navy, it is customary to believe that no submarine is ever completely lost at sea. If the boats and personnel fail to return to port, they will always be regarded as “still on patrol.” Since active duty sailors would never consider abandoning their shipmates who are still on patrol, a message is sent out annually, usually around Christmas, by sailors manning communications centers both ashore and at sea. They wish health and happiness on Christmas to people they know will receive it, and they hope the same to those who are listed as still being on patrol.A total of 374 officers and 3131 men are still on board these 52 U.S. submarines still on patrol.”
