congratulations to our incredible 200-hour class of 2022! the decision to close the studio was made just as their training was beginning. they were offered an out, given that the rug had quite literally been swept out from underneath them. would they opt to continue on, knowing they wouldn’t have a traditional studio to graduate into? would they be willing to improvise with us through the transition when we weren’t quite sure how the remaining six month would play out? would it be worth it? each answered yes. they were already deeply committed to their own development as teachers and to one another. i’m grateful for their focused dedication and blown away by how they taught their final classes this weekend. they trusted the process and showed up for themselves and for one another, remaining grounded and centered along a journey that was entirely fluid. thank you, grads, for that expression of skillful yoga practice. and thank you for seeing, appreciating, and embracing what now yoga offers. watching you make it your own has been the ultimate gift.

after mostly moving out of our astor place home earlier this month, we were back in the studio this weekend for teacher training and a couple of pop-up classes, feeling out what it’s like to be permanently online and sporadically in-person.
the physical space is also in transition as a new tenant settles in and makes it his own. so far, one gray couch has been swapped for another. (new yorkers love gray.) the reception area has been rearranged; the bookshelves now hold candelabras, merchandise, palo santo; a makeshift martini bar sits where the changing room curtains had hung. our organic, minimalist aesthetic is morphing into one that’s more luxe, gothic-romantic. it’s a different vibe.
i worried it would feel strange to be back in the space that’s perhaps now better suited for sound baths and dance parties than for restorative yoga and recovery meetings. instead I felt comforted by the bones of the place—the solid, gleaming floors, the cool, sturdy brick walls, the delicate snow-white ceiling. i felt the essence of the space.
a few years ago, our renovation project involved mostly demolition. we weren’t adding so much as taking away: breaking down walls to let in natural light, polishing the original hardwood to reveal its luster, and repairing the existing tin ceiling to salvage its beauty. design choices were made to reflect our philosophy. there would be no idols and no art within the practice rooms. the space was to be clean, quiet, and honest.
and yet, despite the recent superficial changes to decor and color scheme, practicing together again in that serene space created for me a feeling of coming home.
one of our trainees this weekend said that, for her, our studio has been a safe space. i felt myself welling up. now yoga grew out of a buddhist tradition centered around the concept of basic goodness, where mindfulness practices help us to remove our superficial layers of conditioning to reveal the core of ourselves that is essentially whole.
as we discussed in teacher training this weekend, these practices are a hard sell. there isn’t really anything to sell at all—no self improvement product or project. there is only an invitation to wake up.
look out! while we no longer have permanent residence at our astor place home, we *will* be popping up occasionally for in-person classes.
catch us this weekend at astor place! saturday 3/12 with frank at 10am and sunday 3/13 with edward. proof of vaccination is still required. masks are optional. byo mat, please, if you can. space is limited so sign up in advance.
and stay tuned for future dates!

after a brief hiatus, we’re back to in-person starting this saturday 1/15. come for frank at 10am; stay forever.
every yoga practice yields some kind of transformation, however subtle. ultimately that transformation is personal; all that’s there to mine is inherent in the cells of the individual practitioner. in many ways, it’s a solo journey.
•
and yet, when we practice under the guidance of another—with a teacher—our experience is colored by theirs: the teacher’s own curiosities, explorations, inspirations; as well as their hangups, preoccupations, and struggles.
•
after a class, it’s worth asking ourselves:
•
do i feel more spacious now, or less?
do i feel flooded? or free?
do i feel synchronized?
do i feel scattered?
do i feel the rhythm of my own breath, or someone else’s?
have i moved at my own pace, or have i moved for someone else?
•
as teachers, we are also students. it’s worth asking ourselves the same questions, and to consider:
•
do we wish to force an experience onto our students or allow for them to have their own?
do we come to our students with expectations that are fixed and specific?
are we moving too fast or using too many words?
are we ok with silence?
with stillness?
are we willing to get out of the way?
•
what kind of practice do we wish to offer?
what kind of environment do we wish to create?
what kind of teacher do we want to be?
what’s the job of that teacher?
how can we best execute that version of ourselves as teachers?
•
