George’s 80th Birthday Bash, was an unforgettable celebration. I saw people I hadn’t seen in years, including my 2 besties I had as a newbie in NYC at age 20.
There were stories of meeting George on the Mic. I met George at Nanette Beardens’ Contemporary Dance Theater, he liked my turns in the finale of Suite Otis and made me do the combo at least 50 times, back then we couldn’t ever stop when the choreographers said “again”. I danced Gazzele and every role in Suite Otis. George made me “battle” for “the Widow” All that rehearsing of Otis got me down to the last 3 girls for a contract with the Ailey Company. Mr Ailey took Nasha Thomas which was an excellent choice, she still works at Ailey now. The evening was so beautiful and fulfilling, I just absorbed and video taped George’s speech so I can listen to his words of wisdom over and over again.
These Last 10 years I have seen Geirge as an uncle. All my real uncles are all past 100 years old and long gone. George was there for me a few months ago when I needed him. Thanks for being in our lives George.

Rest in Peace beautiful dear
Ms Carmen De lavallade
First and foremost thank you for being an elder we could look up to our entire dance lives. Not only were you a catalyst and vessel for the Ailey Company, Mother of Modern Dance, thank you. As a lifelong advocate for the presence of Color in Ballet, we were originally taught that you, your relative Janet Collins, and Katherine Dunham were the only women of color fit to be Ballerinas. You held hands with us to pave the way. Thank you for being in the Dance world to create what we are able to enjoy in the 21st Century.
