Speedy recovery Tom

Dear Blues fans,

We want to share a brief update with you.

Birmingham City Football Club Chairman Tom Wagner recently suffered a stroke. Thanks to rapid medical intervention, he received immediate treatment and is now receiving excellent care. We are pleased to share that he is making a good recovery. While he will be stepping back from day-to-day activity for a period of time to focus on his recovery, Tom remains closely connected to the club, and we all look forward to welcoming him back.

Birmingham City Football Club is incredibly important to Tom and to the entire Knighthead team. Their commitment to the club is unchanged, and our plans and operations continue as normal under strong leadership.

We appreciate your continued support and ask that you respect Tom’s privacy during his recovery.

RIP Hoppy

The Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a much loved former player, Robert Hopkins.

The former winger played 207 times for Blues and became a cult hero amongst fans thanks to his no nonsense mentality and passion for the game.

One of our own, who not only played for the Club, but supported home and away once his playing days had finished.

Everyone at the Club sends their thoughts and condolences to “Hoppy’s” friends and family.

We are delighted to confirm the signing of Kai Wagner from Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee, subject to approval and international clearance. ✍️

The 28-year-old defender has put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year contract with Blues through to the summer of 2028. The German left back, who will wear the number 31 shirt, was known for his attacking prowess in the MLS after registering 63 assists during his seven years in the US.

After moving to Philadelphia Union in 2019, Wagner enjoyed a strong first season in the MLS, contributing eight assists in 30 appearances before helping Union win the Supporters’ Shield in 2020. He would go on to be a constant provider of goals, registering eight assists in 2022 – which saw him named in the MLS Best XI – before a further 10 assists followed in the 2024 MLS season.

In 2025, his good form continued with 11 assists and two goals which saw him named in the MLS Best XI for a second time.

Great news

We are delighted to announce that captain Christoph Klarer has committed his future to the Club by signing a new long-term contract. ✍️

The defender has put pen-to-paper on a deal that keeps him at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park until June 2029.

Klarer arrived at Blues in the summer of 2024 from SV Darmstadt 98 and immediately became an ever-present figure, playing a key role in the Club’s record-breaking success last season.

His performances, leadership and defensive qualities also led to Klarer being named captain back in August.

“It feels great. It was something that both sides wanted to get done," he said. “A long-term contract obviously motivates me to work even harder and to really make an impact at this club.

“It was very important for me to have owners that are really ambitious and want to try and go somewhere. Average is not accepted any more at this club and there’s an ambition behind it and that was really important for me.

“To get the chance to work under an elite manager is really important. Someone that pushes me every day and makes me better every day, and at 25 years of age I’ve still got a lot to learn and things to improve, so they are two of the main reasons I decided to stay here for longer.”
