Back training
Back training can be broken down into 2 broad categories...
1 Horizontal pulls - pulling a weight straight in towards your chest
2 Vertical pulls - pulling a weight from above down towards your shoulders
Here's a simple logistics (what equipment do you have, what space do you have, how much time do you have) pulling routine
Bent over sandbag rows
Half kneeling band pull downs

Strength training is a chest code, not only for sport but for life.
All other factors being equal, the strongest is more likely to win.
That's why they have weight classes in combat sports. The idea being a larger heavier combatant should have an unfair strength advantage. It's why teenagers usually don't compete against full grown adults. It's why girls don't compete against boys
Pick up some heavy stuff and start getting stronger.

The End Game
A client recently asked during a session what our end game, or goal of treatment was.
Your injury has healed (the cut on your leg or the broken bone is healed)....
You are out of pain (although I'm not totally certain being 100% pain free is reasonable or required in some cases)...
Your doctor or more likely your insurance company (because they don't want to pay for more visits) says you are cleared to return to your chosen sport at 6 weeks (what type of Dr Strange level sorcery takes place between day 35, you can't play and day 36 you can play)...
Your movement looks good and you passed all the tests...
But you are still scared to do an exercise because you're afraid it will hurt and cause a relapse...
You have to think about or rehearse the movement patterns and all the cues before you move (meanwhile your opponent has passed you by or worse yet your toddler is in the street)...
Maybe you are not fully ready to return to running or full participation in your sport.
Yes, there is a time element to healing, but even more importantly you must be physically, mentally, and emotionally confident in your body's ability to handle the demands of your life and sport. And the emotional confidence may be the hardest to recapture.
So the end goal in our office...
Thoughtless, fearless movement.
Can you do what your life or sport requires without fear or overly thinking about it.
(I wish I could tell you I came up with this idea totally on my own. But I have freely borrowed it. Only I really don't recall who I borrowed it from at this stage)

Cervicogenic Headache
Cranial Nerve V (Roman numeral for 5), also known as the Trigeminal is the main sensory nerve for the face and head. It has 3 branches V1, V2,and V3.
The nerve has branches that connect to nuclei in the brain stem and shares connections to the first 3 cervical nerves.
The sensory nerve roots of C1, C2, and C3 join to form the Greater Occipital Nerve which wraps around the top of the head and supplies sensation to the scalp and top of the head.
Misalignments, reduced joint mobility, or dysfunction of the upper cervical spine can cause problems with the greater Occipital Nerve and may be a cause of cervicogenic headaches.
Pain may originate in the back of the head moving up and over to the front in a ram's horn pattern.
Chiropractic adjustments can help improve the function of the upper cervical spine and reduce the severity and frequency of cervicogenic/tension headaches.

Lateral step down
This is a quick screening test.
You should be able to step down under control on both legs.
If not, you may not be ready to run or return to your sport of choice yet. There may still be an imbalance or weakness somewhere that may leave you more susceptible to further injury.
You could have a low back muscle, gluteal muscle, thigh or hamstring muscle weakness or imbalance.
It could also be an ankle, knee, or hip joint problem.
Some additional tests should be done to determine the actual issue, but this is a good place to start.

Think of Indian Clubs as circular strength training.
The vast majority of exercises in the gym have you moving weight up and down or back and forth.
But in the real world, we twist, turn, rotate and move in all different directions all at once.
Indian Clubs and heavy clubs help train all those twisting and turning patterns.
Using clubs can help improve ankle, hip, thoracic, and shoulder mobility.
They are great for shoulder rehab, strength, and prehab.
They help train throwing patterns.
There really is more going on here than just meets the eye.

Cervicogenic Headache
These headaches are typically...
- one-sided
- follows a ram's head pattern - from the back of the head up and over to the front
- behind one eye
Can be caused by trigger points in the SCM or upper trapezius muscles.
Also dysfunction in the upper cervical spine.
The nerve roots from C1, C2, C3 share the same pathway as the Trigeminal or Facial nerve - the cranial nerve responsible for feeling and pain in the face and head.
Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce the frequency and severity of cervicogenic headaches by improving the function of the upper cervical spine and reducing trigger points in the neck muscles.

Shoulder training
Overhead press with rotation
Here is an example of training the spiral line. This connects the foot to the opposite shoulder.
Notice how you rotate around the foot, and hips to protect the knee.
You're transferring force across the body while improving rotational power and stability.
Now the core and obliques are training not just strength but also stability across the spine and pelvis.
