Military veterans bring some of the strongest leadership experience in the workforce.

And most of it gets lost in translation.

For my recent podcast episode of Careering with Cameron, I sat down with Wendi Wray from Beyond The Military Career Blueprint.

Wendi is a veteran and career coach who bridges the gap between military service and civilian hiring

The conversation shifted how I think about this.

The problem isn't the experience. It's the language.

Wendi walks through the exact terminology shifts that make military experience readable to a corporate recruiter and why moving from "we" to "I" is one of the most important changes a veteran can make.

The thank you note isn't a formality.

It's your chance to stand out.

Most people send a one-liner after an interview. "Thanks for your time. I enjoyed learning about the role."

Here's what actually works:
→ Send it within 24 hours
→ Reference something specific from the conversation. A joke, a shared connection, a challenge they mentioned
→ Address their pain points again — remind them why you're the answer
→ Keep it short and confident

The interview ends when the offer is signed. Not when you walk out the door.

Save this for your next interview.

Most interview prep is about knowing the right answers.

But the thing that actually trips people up isn't the answers. It's what happens when something unexpected lands and the brain goes quiet.

I sat down with Jess Rogers from Tama Learning this week

Jess is a professional improviser and communication coach and she brought a framework into the conversation I hadn't thought about before.

The goal isn't to control the interview. It's to get comfortable enough with yourself that you can accept whatever comes and actually work with it.

It's a lot more useful in an interview room than any list of prepared answers.

Worth a listen if high stakes conversations aren't your comfort zone yet.

Nobody told you this about cover letters.

So we will.

45% of employers see a missing cover letter as a dealbreaker. Not a red flag… a complete dealbreaker.

Here's what makes one work:

→ It sounds like a human, not a template
→ It speaks to their pain points, not just your skills
→ It references something specific about the company - something you actually looked up
→ It's addressed to a real person, not "To Whom It May Concern"

AI can help you draft it but you still have to make it yours.

What's the biggest cover letter mistake you've made? Tell us below.

You did the hard part. You got the interview.

And then nothing.

Most people either go completely quiet or send one too many "just checking in" emails.

In this solo episode of Careering with Cameron I talk through something that doesn't get enough attention in a job search… tracking.

Who you've spoken to, when you followed up, which version of your resume you sent, what the conversation was about.

It sounds like admin. It's actually what keeps you sane and sharp when someone calls out of the blue three weeks later and you need to know exactly where things stand.

One strategic touch at a time. But only if you know where you left off.

This episode doesn't get enough credit.

In this episode of Careering with Cameron, Kevin breaks down of how to use AI as an actual job search strategy

Not just for writing your CV, but for finding roles that aren't even posted yet, researching companies, and preparing for interviews in a way that makes you sound like you've been in the industry for years.

If you're still just hitting "apply" and hoping for the best, this one will change how you approach the whole process.

Which tip are you trying first?

Most job searches start with a job posting.

Find a role > Apply > Wait > Repeat

But when AI is flooding inboxes and ATS is filtering resumes before anyone's read them, that process is putting an awful lot of your career in the hands of luck.

In this solo episode of Careering with Cameron, Kevin talks through a different approach.

It's called the reverse application.

Worth a listen if your search has felt like shouting into a void.

Your CV isn't always the problem.

Most of the time, it’s your strategy.

Job seekers send the same resume to 50 jobs and wonder why nothing sticks.

Here are some tips that actually work:

1. Define your target: pick 2–3 specific roles, not "anything in marketing"

2. Build a Master Resume first: one clean document with everything in it

3. Customise per application: tailor your bullets to match the job description

4. Apply within 48 hours of a posting going live

5. Follow up. Every time.

The job market rewards specificity.
