As Orange County's only full-time aikido dojo, the Shin Do Kan dojo was established in 1987 to teach the traditional art of aikido. It continues the legacy first started in Japan during the last century by the founder Ueshiba Morihei. The world class dojo is made up of a cosmopolitan and diverse group of students and is led by chief instructor Pennewaert Shihan, 7th Dan. He insures a high standard of safety at all times and provides a solid foundation in the basic fundamentals of aikido technique and etiquette.

We’re early and entering this Yokomen attack.

Now, we’re late so we blend with the same attack

We are now drawing in with Yokomen.

The essential lesson is: suwari-waza should still feel like standing technique. You must enter, advance, complete the cut, and settle the pin with your whole body. Being on your knees changes the footwork, but it should not reduce the movement, posture, extension, or commitment of the technique.

Different upon your timing and pressure, you can go in directly or change direction when uke is off balanced. Make sure your hands are always in front of you for full control.” Gentil Pennewaert Shihan, 7th Dan Aikikai

Note: these are lessons in our dojo. In real life, timing is much different and feeling is important in your response.

“In Loving Memory of Seiichi Sugano Shihan
August 29, 2010

Sixteen years have passed since Sugano Shihan left us, yet his spirit lives on through every practice, every lesson, and every life he touched.

Today, we honor our beloved Sensei by keeping his teachings and loving memory alive in our hearts and through our Aikido.

Forever remembered.”
