“Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!” Clayton Moore’s masked hero and Jay Silverheels as Tonto defined TV Western heroes for kids of the ’50s.
After the show ended, Moore continued to appear in costume, keeping the legend alive, while Silverheels faced typecasting, struggling to find roles outside of Native American stereotypes.
Still, Silverheels broke barriers by later supporting Native actors in Hollywood. Together, they remain one of television’s greatest duos.
