WHAT IS ONE TIGER BASKETBALL MEMORY YOU’LL NEVER FORGET?

My connection to Tiger basketball started long before I ever put on the uniform.

I remember sitting with my dad and watching old VHS tapes of my brother’s senior season. The 1990–91 Tigers averaged 78.1 points per game and remain the highest-scoring team in school history, but as a kid, I didn’t realize what I was watching.

I just knew I loved watching them play.

Then came the 1998–99 and 1999–2000 teams and the excitement of watching the Tigers win back-to-back district championships.

Eventually, I had the opportunity to experience Tiger basketball myself.

As a player, I was fortunate to be part of the 2003 team that won Newton Falls’ first league championship since 1975, along with a district championship.

Later, basketball brought me back to Newton Falls as a coach.

I’ve experienced even more special moments—watching players grow, celebrating big wins, dealing with tough losses, and seeing teammates become lifelong friends.

And that’s one of the things I’ve realized while researching this project:

Every generation has its own Tiger basketball memories.

For some, it might be a championship game. For others, it might be a teammate, a coach, a packed gym, a game-winning shot, or simply a season they’ll never forget.

So now I want to hear from Tiger Nation.

Because a box score can tell us who won.

HELP US FILL IN THE MISSING PIECES OF TIGER BASKETBALL HISTORY

Over the past several years, I have spent countless hours researching the history of Newton Falls basketball. With the help of the Newton Falls Library, newspaper archives, other historical records, and the available inventory of yearbooks at Newton Falls High School, we have been able to uncover and piece together information from many of the program’s earliest seasons.

However, there are still gaps.

Unfortunately, some of the early yearbooks are not included in the school’s currently available inventory, and there are still seasons where information is missing or incomplete.

The graphic below lists seasons where we are still searching for missing or incomplete information. For some of these years, we may know a record or have limited information, but are still missing important pieces such as player names, photographs, newspaper coverage, statistics, or stories.

WHO ARE THESE TIGERS?

We know the team.

We know what they accomplished.

And we have a list of possible names connected to the team.

But we’re still trying to put those names to the faces.

This photograph is of the 1932-33 Newton Falls basketball team, which won the Inter-Valley League Championship.

Through my research, I’ve been able to identify the head coach, Carl Spessard. He is pictured in the middle of the back row.

I have also been able to uncover possible names of players associated with this team.

The challenge now is figuring out which name belongs to which face.

And that’s where I need Tiger Nation’s help.

Take a close look at this photograph. Do you recognize a grandfather, great-grandfather, relative, or family friend? Have you seen this picture before or heard stories about this team?

Even identifying one player could help us put another important piece of Tiger basketball history together.

THE BEGINNING OF TIGER BASKETBALL

Did you know Newton Falls basketball dates all the way back to the 1915-16 season?

The inaugural documented Tigers finished that season 5-1-1, beginning what would become a 112-season tradition.

I’ve included a photograph of that first team, with the players we have been able to identify.

And in the next photo, you’ll see Newton Falls Town Hall—the early home of Tiger basketball.

Imagine those first Tigers taking the court there more than 110 years ago.

From that first 5-1-1 team to the 2026-27 Tigers preparing for their 112th season, generations of players have carried the Newton Falls name onto the court.

And this is only the beginning.

HELP US WRITE THE HISTORY OF TIGER BASKETBALL

Hello Tiger Nation,

My name is Dan Rankin, and I am a former Tiger basketball player and the current JV basketball coach at Newton Falls. I’ve been coaching for 20 years, and Tiger basketball has been a part of my life for a long time.

Several years ago, I began researching the 1931 Newton Falls basketball team. What started as research on one team quickly turned into something much bigger.

The more I researched, the more I discovered about the incredible history of Newton Falls basketball—from the early years of the program, to championship teams, the 1931 State Final Four, and the remarkable story of having only two coaches lead the program for over 70 years!

That research eventually led to my current project:

I’m writing a book about the complete history of Newton Falls Tiger Basketball.

The goal is to preserve the stories of the players, coaches, teams, and fans who have made Tiger basketball such an important part of our community.

Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing some of the history I’ve uncovered. I’ll also be putting out a questionnaire for former players, coaches, and followers of the program from all eras so we can capture the stories and memories that don’t appear in newspaper archives or record books.

As we approach our 112th season, there are still significant gaps in our early history.

With the help of the Newton Falls Library, I’ve been able to uncover information from several early seasons, including 1928-29, 1929-30, 1931-32, 1934-35, and 1935-36. But many seasons remain incomplete, including several in the 1910s, 1920s, and late 1930s.

That’s where I need Tiger Nation’s help.

If you have old team pictures, yearbooks, newspaper clippings, rosters, schedules, scorebooks, scrapbooks, or family stories, I’d love to see them.

And even if you don’t have anything from the early years, I want to hear your Tiger basketball story.

Because this isn’t just my history project.

It’s our history.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll take a journey through 112 seasons of Tiger basketball, uncovering championship teams, forgotten stories, memorable players and coaches, and pieces of our history that have been waiting to be found.

🇺🇸🐅 👑The 2025–26 League Champion TIGERS took part in the annual Newton Falls Fourth of July Parade this weekend.

It was a great opportunity for our players to celebrate alongside the community and be part of a special year as Newton Falls helps commemorate America’s 250th birthday as only Newton Falls can!

Thank you to the Fourth of July Committee for putting on another incredible parade and celebration. We’re proud to represent the Tiger Basketball family both on and off the court! 🏀🐅🇺🇸

The TIGERS wrapped up their final summer team event this week with the help of several outstanding alumni and friends of the program.

Our players had the opportunity to compete against a talented group that included current and former college and professional players: Cody Dillon, Joey Kline, Jabriel Rufai, Cameron Huff, Ryan Romigh, and Peyton Aldridge.

It’s always special when our TIGER basketball family comes back to help out the next generation. We’re very lucky to have cultivated a family atmosphere and always appreciate how much pride our former players (and adopted family members) take in TIGER Basketball.

With summer team activities now complete, the focus shifts to individual workouts and continued player development as the reigning MVAC Champions begin preparations to defend their conference crown this winter 👑🐅🏀

The JV and Varsity TIGERS wrapped up their annual team camp this week at Marietta College, where they spent three days competing, learning, and growing as a program.

Between games, cafeteria food, campus life, and staying the dorms, our players got a true college-style experience. The Tigers competed in more than 16 games and 3 bracket-style tournaments against teams from nearly 40 high schools representing three different states, gaining valuable experience against a wide variety of opponents.

As anyone that has attended team camp with us over the years can attest, the lessons learned and relationships built will carry on long after camp ends. Sharing meals in the cafeteria, staying together in the dorms, and competing side-by-side for three straight days helped strengthen the bonds that make great teams successful.

Every year our players return from team camp a little tougher, a little more confident, and a lot more connected. The work continues this summer, but this week was another important step in preparing for another championship season ahead.

If you’ve driven by the city park these last few weeks you’ve seen the best parts of TIGER Basketball on full display. Coach Sembach has been running his 35th annual youth camp with kids from kindergarten through high school. The entire Newton Falls Family in the heart of the city carrying on the Tiger Basketball Tradition!

Your next chance to catch the present-day TIGERS is tonight at The Zorn: 6:00 vs Southeast, 7:40 vs Aurora.

The TIGERS spent their Sunday at John Carroll University for a 7-game shootout.

After opening the day with tough losses to St. Edward and St. Martin, the TIGERS responded in impressive fashion, rattling off four straight wins over Crestwood, Lutheran West, Chardon, and Avon Lake before falling on a last-second shot to Mentor Lake Catholic to finish the day with a winning record. It was a valuable day of growth and competition against seven strong opponents.

The next chance to catch the summer TIGERS in action is Monday night at The Zorn for Summer League at 5:10 and 7:40.
