Train the horse you have today.
We spend so much time training toward the horse we hope to have in six months, two years, five years.
We have goals for what theyâll look like, how theyâll move, what level theyâll compete at, how strong theyâll become.
Having a vision for the future is important.
But especially with young horses, the horse you have today might be very different from the horse you had six weeks ago, or even six days ago.
They grow. They get stronger. They get tired. Their balance changes. Something that was easy last month might suddenly feel hard, and something youâve struggled with for months might seemingly click overnight.
Sometimes we get so focused on developing the horse we know they could become that we start riding an imaginary finished version of them instead of the actual horse underneath us.
Training has to start with what that horse is capable of today.
Ask todayâs questions, note todayâs answers.
Then use that information to build tomorrowâs horse.
