THANK YOU to all who took time out of their Fridays to voice their ideas, stories, and concerns during our virtual town hall. We’re so grateful for our community of college sailors and supporters and are excited to get to work.
Illustration notes: inspired by a notable statement from the town hall meeting, the Racing Rules of Sailing is what all competitors agree to abide by when they enter any regatta within the United States. Rule 1 of Part 1 of the RRS is about safety and requires us to “Help those in danger: a boat or competitor shall give all possible help to any person or vessel in danger.” If you see someone in danger on the water, it is your duty to stop what you are doing, put aside whatever win you are working toward, and offer whatever assistance you can to the vessel in need. That vessel right now is the black community, and every single person, organization, and business has a role in helping. That role is different for everyone, but we must help the vessel in danger.
We, the coaches at Big Blue Sailing Academy, are hopeful we can return to the athletic activities we all love this summer. As springtime proceeds, we feel the need to get on the water now more than ever! Currently, we are proceeding with care and caution regarding our summer planning and schedules for classes and regattas. We are trying to be wise in committing to expenses and plans in the event cancellations become necessary. We do recognize that much of what we do going forward for this spring and summer will be based on decisions and guidance of other entities. At some point in the coming weeks, it may become impractical to continue with the currently scheduled regattas or classes, but we hope not. In the time being, US Sailing is putting out great content.
