Beautiful love story!
In the coming days, we’re going to hear a lot about Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life—her music, her unmistakable personality, her business savvy, her generosity, and the remarkable way she became an American icon.
But in the midst of celebrating all of that, I hope we also remember something quieter: her love story.
Dolly met Carl Dean outside the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville in 1964. She was 18. He was 21. Two years later they married in a tiny ceremony with only Dolly’s mother, the preacher, and his wife present. And they stayed married for nearly 59 years, until Carl died last year.
It was an unusual marriage for someone so famous. Dolly lived much of her life in the spotlight; Carl wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. And somehow, rather than trying to make each other more alike, they made room for those differences.
Dolly once said, “We’re completely opposite, but that’s what makes it fun.” She described Carl as secure in himself, someone who made her laugh and kept her grounded.
After Carl died, Dolly wrote something that seems especially poignant today:
“Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story.”
Behind one of the biggest personalities the world has ever known was a remarkably private marriage—two very different people who loved each other, gave each other room to be themselves, laughed together, and kept choosing each other for nearly six decades.
Today, as the world remembers Dolly Parton for everything she gave us, we are also remembering the love she and Carl gave each other.
A great career is a legacy. But so is a great love story.
