3. Oklahoma’s Second-Half Fight Was Real
Trailing 10-0 at halftime, the Sooners could have easily allowed the atmosphere and Michigan’s physicality to overwhelm them.

Instead, Oklahoma fought back.

The Sooners scored on their first two possessions of the second half.

First came a 22-yard touchdown pass from John Mateer to Mackenzie Alleyne, cutting the deficit to 10-7.

Then came another reliable moment from Tate Sandell.

The Oklahoma kicker drilled a 34-yard field goal with 11:49 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 10.

Suddenly, the game had completely changed.

Oklahoma had survived the first-half struggles.

It had survived the noise.

It had survived poor field position.

And it had turned a 10-point deficit into a brand-new football game.

Brent Venables acknowledged the disappointment afterward.

“Certainly was planning on coming in here and talk about the great comeback that we had, but fell short. Really disappointed in how things shaped up.”

That’s the painful reality of Saturday.

Oklahoma had the comeback.

It just couldn’t finish it.

Oklahoma walked into Michigan Stadium on Saturday facing one of the biggest road environments in college football.

The Sooners walked out with one of the more frustrating losses of the Brent Venables era.

In front of 111,240 fans — the largest crowd Oklahoma has ever played in front of — No. 11 OU fell 17-10 to Michigan. The Sooners had opportunities. They outgained the Wolverines. They dominated stretches of the second half. They erased a 10-point halftime deficit and tied the game in the fourth quarter.

But turnovers, field position and missed opportunities proved too much to overcome.

For a brief moment in the fourth quarter, Oklahoma appeared to have found a way out.

After spending much of Saturday afternoon fighting Michigan, the noise inside the Big House and its own offensive inconsistency, the Sooners finally broke through. John Mateer connected with Mackenzie Alleyne for a 22-yard touchdown, Tate Sandell added a field goal, and a game that once looked like it might slip away had suddenly become a 10-10 battle.

Oklahoma had survived.

Or so it seemed.

The Sooners would eventually leave Ann Arbor with a 17-10 loss, undone by turnovers and a Michigan touchdown following a critical fourth-quarter interception. The scoreboard says Oklahoma lost by seven. It suggests a competitive game decided by a handful of plays.

That is true.

But it doesn't tell the entire story.

Because when the film from Michigan Stadium is examined, Oklahoma's offense looks like something much more concerning than a unit that simply had a bad afternoon against a good defense.

The Sooners were disjointed.

They were penalized.

They couldn't consistently run the football.

They struggled to protect their quarterback.

Their receivers had difficulty creating separation.

Their quarterback missed throws.

And offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle never appeared to find a consistent answer for the problems unfolding in front of him.

Yes, the offensive line was a major problem.

But Oklahoma's offensive struggles went beyond the trenches.

The offensive line may have caused the initial leak.

The rest of the offense helped turn it into a flood.

There is no reason to panic after one loss.

But there is plenty of reason to ask questions.

Oklahoma scored 51 points in its season-opening victory over UTEP. The Sooners looked explosive, efficient and capable of creating big plays all over the field. Michigan was always going to be a dramatically different challenge, but Saturday exposed just how far Oklahoma’s offense still has to go before it can be considered a finished product.

The Sooners scored just 10 points.

Against a physical Michigan defense in one of the loudest environments in college football, Oklahoma struggled to consistently run the football, struggled to create explosive plays and eventually made the kind of mistakes that are almost impossible to overcome on the road.

The result was an offense that never found a consistent identity.

And it starts with the quarterback.

For most of Saturday afternoon, No. 11 Oklahoma was still in the football game.

That may be the most frustrating part.

The Sooners traveled to Michigan Stadium with an opportunity to make one of the biggest early statements in college football. They had survived the noise, weathered Michigan’s physicality and fought their way back from a 10-point deficit. By the fourth quarter, Oklahoma had erased a 10-0 halftime hole and tied the game.

Then came the mistake Oklahoma couldn’t overcome.

A critical John Mateer interception gave Michigan a short field, Jordan Marshall punched in the go-ahead touchdown, and the Sooners walked out of the Big House with a 17-10 loss.

It wasn’t a blowout. It wasn’t a collapse in the traditional sense. In many ways, that makes the loss more difficult to digest.

Oklahoma had opportunities.

Michigan simply made fewer mistakes.

And after watching the Sooners struggle offensively for much of the afternoon, the biggest questions leaving Ann Arbor are centered squarely on what Oklahoma wants to be offensively moving forward.
