Ten years after becoming the first pitcher to strike out 20 batters in a nine-inning major-league game, Clemens reached 20 again—becoming the first pitcher to accomplish the feat twice.

Twenty strikeouts. One game. Another performance for the record books.

On September 17, 1968, Ga***rd Perry delivered nine hitless innings and a 1–0 victory.

His first career no-hitter was already remarkable—but baseball wasn’t finished. The following day, Ray Washburn answered by no-hitting Perry’s club, producing consecutive no-hitters by opposing teams in the same series.

Rennie Stennett made seven trips to the plate on September 16, 1975—and collected seven hits.

His historic 7-for-7 performance came as Pittsburgh defeated Chicago 22–0, still one of the most overwhelming shutouts in major-league history.

Steve Carlton delivered one of baseball’s most overpowering performances on September 15, 1969.

The left-hander struck out a record 19 batters—but somehow walked away with a 4–3 loss. It remains a striking reminder that one player can dominate almost every moment of a game without controlling its final result.

Also remembered today: Hooks Wiltse’s 12th straight victory, Butch Henline’s three-homer game, the Waner brothers going back-to-back and Bobby Thigpen recording save No. 50.

Ken Griffey Sr. stepped to the plate and homered. Moments later, Ken Griffey Jr. followed with one of his own—making them the first father and son to hit back-to-back home runs in a major-league game.
