Today for Black History Month,
Cornerstone would like to feature,
Althea Gibson as this weeks inspiration 💪
Despite the severe racial, social and economic barriers that African American athletes have been subjected to throughout history, there have been notable individuals who have risen above the challenges and shattered all expectations.
Not only did these athletes achieve "firsts" in their sport, but many also felt a heavy responsibility to stand up for their communities and use their fame to push for more inclusion both on and off the field.
Born August 25th, 1927 in Clarendon, SC
Althea Neale Gibson was an American tennis player and professional golfer, and one of the first Black athletes to cross the color line of international tennis. In 1956, she became the first African American to win a Grand Slam title.
Gibson was named Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in years 1957 and 1958.
Gibson was the first African-American woman to appear on Time and Sports Illustrated covers.
Before becoming a pro in 1959, Gibson had already won 56 national and international singles and doubles titles. 💪
