SPARRING [spahr-ing] Noun

An activity in which you suddenly forget everything you’ve ever learned.

Your jab disappears.
Your footwork files for unemployment.
Your breathing becomes a panic attack.
Every combo you’ve drilled 10,000 times vanishes.
You stare at openings… and do absolutely nothing.
Then, somehow, the only technique you remember is throwing the same overhand right from three zip codes away.

Yet somehow…

You leave a better fighter than when you walked in.

Mixed martial arts wasn’t created to replace traditional martial arts. It was created to combine the strengths of them.

A specialist is dangerous in the range they train most. A mixed martial artist is prepared for striking, clinching, takedowns, ground fighting, submissions, and transitions between them.

The goal isn’t to be the best boxer, wrestler, or jiu jitsu practitioner. The goal is to become the most complete fighter possible.

A complete skill set leaves fewer weaknesses than a specialized one.

Every December 25th in Santo Tomás, Peru, the community settles its personal disputes through regulated fistfights in a tradition called Takanakuy.

Men, women, and children may participate. Punches and kicks are allowed, but hair pulling, biting, and attacking a downed opponent are forbidden. Referees enforce the rules, and every fight begins and ends with a handshake or hug.

When the final bout is over, the entire town celebrates together, leaving old grudges behind and entering the New Year with a clean slate.

Sometimes the hardest punch isn’t thrown out of anger. It’s thrown so neither person has to carry that anger into the next year.

Everyone should train a martial art at least once in their life.

Not because you want to fight.

Because it changes you.

Martial arts teaches humility long before it teaches confidence. It replaces ego with discipline, panic with composure, and fantasy with reality.

Too many people think they’re dangerous simply because they’ve never been tested.

The mats have a way of exposing that illusion.

You quickly learn that toughness isn’t loud.
Confidence isn’t arrogance.
Being dangerous isn’t something you claim. It’s something you earn through discipline, repetition, and pressure.

Whether it’s boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, or MMA, it doesn’t matter where you begin.

Just begin.

It’s far better to learn these lessons in a controlled environment, surrounded by people who want to see you succeed, than to have life teach them to you when the stakes are real.

Pressure reveals character.

The mats reveal who you’re becoming.

I beat Eddie Hall’s 208,901 PowerKube score.

I scored 220,196.

I’m not the strongest man, I’m not a professional fighter. I’m not a world champion. I’m just an old coach teaching private MMA lessons from my home.

What’s interesting isn’t the score.

It’s how quickly some people try to discredit an accomplishment instead of clap for it.

That’s often how success works. The moment you do something unexpected, people look for reasons it doesn’t count instead of appreciating the years of work that made it possible.

Don’t let that stop you.

Keep showing up. Keep improving. Keep proving to yourself what’s possible.

The people who matter will celebrate your wins.

The rest were never going to anyway.

A martial artist isn’t built by one attribute.

Technical skill, Fight IQ, Timing, Distance Management, Conditioning, Speed, Power, Adaptability, Mental Toughness, and Discipline all matter.

They’re not separate pieces competing for attention. They’re pieces of the same puzzle.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is athletes obsessing over power while neglecting everything else. Power is important, but power without timing, distance management, conditioning, or Fight IQ rarely wins against a complete martial artist.

Even these 10 traits are only the beginning. Flexibility, balance, coordination, recovery, mobility, accuracy, composure, and countless other attributes also play a role.

There are many pieces to the pie.

The fighter who develops only one or two traits may look impressive in certain moments. The fighter who develops all the pieces gives themselves the best chance to succeed when it matters most.

Train the whole martial artist, not just your favorite attribute.

I liquidated everything I owned.

Moved 1,200 miles away from home.

Started my coaching business with a pair of Thai pads and a folding chair.

No investors.
No fancy facility.
No shortcuts.

Just years of martial arts, a relentless work ethic, and faith that if I helped enough people, it would work.

Today, I get to do what I love for a living.

Never underestimate what can happen when you’re willing to start from zero.
