Kripalu teacher. I teach: mindfulness, meditation, restorative, yin, stress and anxiety reduction. I teach in a high school.

I love upbeat music, holding postures, and laughing! My meditations are on insight timer, some are specifically for teachers. Sorry, I am currently only teaching Yoga classes as part of my new role as a PE teacher at a local high school, but I will continue to update this page with resources for yoga, health, and mindfulness. Donna has been teaching Yoga and Mindfulness at a public high school since 2015. She tries to empower her students with strategies to reduce stress and anxiety. She’s received her 200 hour yoga training and restorative yoga teacher certification from Kripalu, became certified to teach mindfulness in 2020, and is also certified by Massachusetts to provide teachers with professional development focusing on using mindfulness to address student’s social-emotional learning. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This class will be a brief introduction to mindfulness, followed by a guided relaxing body scan meditation. The talk with cover the following topics: What are the physiological ways to calm the body, and why are they important? How do I do mindful breathing correctly? The role of the Amygdala and Prefrontal Cortex. What is the witness mind and how do I access it? What can mindfulness do for me? What’s the difference between formal and informal practice? What are ways I can fit mindfulness into my life even when I’m really busy? Types of mindfulness meditation: breathing, seeing, hearing, grounding, walking, emotion, body scan, relaxation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

They need to develop an awareness of good posture and strengthen the upper back with yoga and exercises like these. In her Ted talk, Michelle tells the story of how parents objected to the establishment of compulsory education in the 1800s, felt that children sitting at desks all day wouldn't be healthy. The schools responded with posture practice and exercises that were part of school curriculums until the 1960s. We need this attention to our student's health more than ever.

As I develop a class in yoga and mindfulness that I'm delivering to my students online, I'm going to share resources that I'm using to support my curriculum. In this first, Amy Cuddy describes how good posture (something yoga is known for as you bring mindful awareness to the foundation of poses) is not only good for you physiologically, but psychologically. She also writes about how a confident power pose activates an Approach Behavior system rather than the Avoid Behavior system. Approach is when we feel happy, Avoid is when we feel fear. “Procrastination is an emotion regulation problem, not a time management problem,” said Dr. Tim Pychyl, professor of psychology and member of the Procrastination Research Group at Carleton University in Ottawa."

Yes! This! And how do we deal with negative emotions? This is what I tell my students: shame is a crippling emotions. So:
"One option is to forgive yourself in the moments you procrastinate."
Yup. Try this trick: spend 20 minutes working, 5 minutes free rest. That free time will help stop the buildup of shame if you are having work completion problems.
Self-compassion, self-acceptance, be forgiving with everyone, but start with your own lovely self.
