🚨Attention parents of equestrian kids with sensory issues!! 🚨

I’ve found the absolute best half chaps. J wanted the look of tall boots but I knew she wouldn’t tolerate the feel of leather half chaps so I hadn’t bought any yet. Then I was helping a little one adjust their stirrups at Cornerstone the other week and happened to feel her half chaps and they were actually *squishy*. I had her mom send me the Amazon link and after a little digging I found that these are a generic half chap, branded a ton of ways on Amazon, and selling for between $26-50 depending on the branding. They feel like a squishy neoprene mesh with faux leather at the inside of the calf for grip. You can find them by searching “flexible mesh equestrian children half chap”. I typically advocate buying local whenever possible but these are worth caving to Amazon.

I have to list the brand names because they read like AI nonsense 😂

But oddly not “Chan’s Equestrianism” which is screen printed on the side. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Feel free to share if you have other parent friends who may be in the same boat. And let me know if YOU have found riding gloves that your sensitive kids will wear 🙃

No brakes, no steering, why not?

Sound on for gentle clip clops in the woods. Dos led the way for a two mile hike yesterday. He occasionally stopped to breathe in deeply to smell something but never balked and I think he would have marched on forever if there had been time. I had the chain on him as insurance but he never once hit the end of it so he can hike in his flat halter next time.

We tried a different angle today and used Adora (18 year old Arabian) to encourage him to stand at the mounting block. After just one successful mounting with the block, he seemed to understand entirely and at that point couldn’t care less what I did. I pulled out my old baby starting tricks and was able to jump up and down on the block, hang over his back, reach across him and pat his other side (I’m usually not a patter but in this case I’m testing for sensitivity where my leg will hang) and eventually mount and follow Adora around for a couple laps at the walk. His brakes and steering are lacking but he’s one mellow horse when he understands the assignment. If you’re curious about his bit, it’s a loop ring or beval cheek. It has a mild leverage action and I’m using it just in case he gets tricky. I’ll transition to a regular snaffle once we trust each other a bit more. Thanks as always to my ground person and photographer,

Back to school for Dos! He had several weeks to just eat and run around during the last bit of summer break but we decided it was time to hop on. Horses have a way of making their own plans though. He is absolutely solid for tacking up and clearly got the idea that I was going to ride him. Jockeys get a leg up on the move though so every time I got close to getting on he was like “ok here we go, get up then!” I’m no jockey and no longer able to take a flying leap onto a horse but he was absolutely convinced I could get on while he was walking. We ended with some groundwork instead and Dos grumbling about how I’m the worst jockey he’s ever had 😂

Doesn’t he look cute though? His pad was a gift from Auntie Jenn 🤩

I realized I’ve never shared his name! His Jockey Club name is Mendonsa, and we call him Dos (like the Spanish number two) in the barn. When I was talking to the people at Retiring Racehorses NW about him, they mentioned they had a lot of horses to list and were listing some of the “plain brown” ones first to give them more time to move. Plain brown?? I think his color is lovely. Who doesn’t love the color of fresh coffee, dark chocolate, or a rich porter? Besides, he’s the very picture of tall, dark, and handsome.

My new TB arrived in front shoes and while the eventual goal has always been barefoot, I was planning to transition him slowly. He and his giant overstep had other plans though and he took matters into his own hands. The good thing is that he’s totally sound barefoot and his trimmer says he’s going to transition beautifully. Check out the size of that shoe! He really does have nice big feet for a Thoroughbred.

So how did I go about picking a horse I wasn’t going to be able to go see? My absolute criteria were; at least four years old, big feet, lots of bone, and a kind eye. I also have some cosmetic preferences such as big ears, a thick tail, and either no white legs or four white legs. He checked all these boxes. Additionally, he was described as being easygoing and a horse they thought would transition to a new career well. I had to depend on the reputation of the sellers, but I had only heard good things about them and so far he seems exactly as he was represented! Photo by

My heart is incomplete without a horse, but after having to return Lou due to lack of time I needed to proceed with caution. The solution ended up being a shared project with . We selected this nice Thoroughbred gelding from Emerald Downs and bought him sight unseen which is a first for me. I’m going to try to document his progress here and be as honest about the process as possible so follow along if that’s interesting to you!

Adora was looking extra beautiful during a dark and stormy lesson with N yesterday.
