Armchair Rules Official

Viktor Hovland narrowly avoided a potential two-shot penalty during this weekend’s Tour Championship at East Lake after several viewers believed they saw him ground his club in a greenside bunker on the par 4 13th hole.

The situation was brought to the attention of tournament officials, who reviewed the available video evidence.

The incident also highlights an interesting aspect of professional golf: viewers watching from home can report potential rules violations they believe they have seen during tournament coverage. According to USGA Chief Governance Officer Thomas Pagel, governing bodies review information brought to their attention. The PGA Tour, R&A, LPGA and other professional tours have similar processes, although most reported situations ultimately do not result in a rules violation.

So how do viewers report a potential violation?

Reports can be submitted through email, website contact forms, phone messages and, in some cases, social media. Tournament staff and officials monitor incoming communications during events and can review potential incidents using available television footage and other evidence.

Professional golf already has extensive oversight during competition, including on-site rules officials, television cameras and video replay. However, as with any sport, situations can occasionally arise that require additional review.

In Hovland’s case, rules official Mark Dusbabek stated that after reviewing the high-definition video evidence, it did not appear that Hovland touched or disturbed the sand. As a result, no penalty was assessed.

The potential penalty carried significant consequences. A two-shot penalty would reportedly have cost Hovland approximately $3 million in prize money and moved him from sole possession of second place into a tie for third.

After your next round at Broadlands, when you are sitting at the 19th hole, just say to your buddies, “Should TV viewers be able to report potential rules violations they see during professional golf tournaments?” … and see what they have to say.

A Toast to the End of Summer -- Iconic Golf Drinks

What better way to celebrate the end of summer than a toast to it with some iconic golf drinks after a round of golf. How grand to relive it afterwards, regaling the high points and bemoaning the low points.

We would like to share a few of the more popular ones (some being regional) that clubandresortchef.com recognized in a recent article. Let us add that we first had to try each and every one of these to be sure we are reporting accurate information.

It will come as no surprise that one of the most popular was the Azalea from Augusta National and is the official drink of The Masters. Recipe: Pour 2 ozs. vodka, 2 ozs. pineapple juice, 1 oz. lemon juice and a spoonful of grenadine into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake then strain into a tall glass over ice. Garnish with lemon.

Number two was the Transfusion from Dwight Eisenhower’s club in Palm Desert. It was good enough to lubricate his golf swing, they say. Recipe: Combine 3 ozs. vodka, 1.5 ozs. grape juice, and .25 oz. lime juice. Pour over ice. Top with ginger ale. Garnish, if desired.

Also, on the list was a Sweet “Tee” Mule. Recipe: Combine 2 ozs. sweet tea vodka with 2 ozs. ginger beer in a copper mug. Add crushed ice, two squeezes of lime and stir to combine. Garnish with blackberries. (This was our favorite. See article for kicked up blackberries.)

Try the Glenmorangie if you enjoy Guiness Stout and the Open. It is the unofficial “Spirit of the Open Championship". The distillery is located close to the Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Scotland. Serve it neat or on the rocks.

Other favorites on the list were a Whiskey Sour, John Daly, Moscow Mule, Old Fashioned, Gin and Tonic, and of course, the ageless Bloody Mary.

Perfecting Your Downswing

Does a short backswing or an overly long one make a difference in the length of a drive? Think Tony Finau (short) and John Daly (past parallel). Both of these guys bomb the ball so the short answer is no. In other words, the total length of your backswing does not impact distance.

Charlie Parsons at theleftrough.com will tell you that speed and timing are much more critical factors. He says that what matters more than anything is your TRANSITION from your backswing to the downswing. That is the moment of truth. Get it right means the rest of your swing is in sequence and you’ll probably make more solid contact with your club face being square at impact.

If you decide to rush the transition, then several things can go wrong such as:

1. Getting Too Quick — If you rush, then your hips, arms, and shoulders will be out of sync. There needs to be a slight pause at the top of your backswing. This way, you can uncoil and move your weight to your lead foot to start the downswing. If you don’t pause, your weight is more than likely on your back foot which will cause you to lose distance and make poor contact.

If you don’t pause at the top, you will need to practice by actively counting (1-2-Go or 1-2-3) to make yourself pause. It will feel awkward at first but that’s OK. You need to retrain your brain.

2. Getting Too Long — 99% of the Tour Guys are either parallel or short of parallel. When you get too long, bad things can happen, such as a reverse pivot (weight staying on the back foot instead of moving forward through impact). Additionally, past parallel throws your timing off. Please note that you should never be past parallel with irons and wedges.

***Note from editor. Women especially are guilty of exceeding parallel possibly because they are more flexible. When they do, they often break down at the top of their swing and collapse, which results in a bad swing and/or loss of distance. Also, this action can result in chicken winging.

Take a few videos of your drives and see if you are guilty of rushing the downswing (no pause) or going past parallel. The videos will be quite telling. Remember to practice the pause on the range if you don’t do so at this time. You will start hitting more consistent shots when you do so.
