After a frustrating season we finally found some smaller fish popping up here and there chasing small rain bait and butterfish. After a couple hours with no luck on them we kept pushing farther we finally found what we were looking for—spraying halfbeaks with some absolute units chasing them.

Drew made his first perfectly placed cast right into a pile of halfbeaks. This fish tore off that pile, charged his Black Ledge Lures popper, and absolutely CRUSHED it just 10 feet off the bow of the boat!

Everybody on the boat did a great job, and this fish met the end of a Tiller Fabrication & Design dart shot in just under an hour. Good times with a great crew. Boatside pic from Matt DeAmbrose

The striped bass fishing has been the best we’ve seen in years. It’s been absolute mayhem on topwater, with daily squid annihilation and bass feeding from sunup to sundown.
Every day has been a little different, but the Hogy Lures Dog Walker and Surface Eraser have consistently been the ticket. The bass are so keyed in on squid right now that the amber and pink colors have been getting the most attention.
If you can find the squid, keep a topwater tied on. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Everything we’ve seen so far has us excited for the season ahead. Bait is stacked up, whales are showing in big numbers, and the fishery feels alive already. With the regulations back to where they should be, we’re hopeful the bluefin make an early appearance and get things rolling fast.

Of course, tuna don’t always follow the script, but the signs are encouraging. June 1st can’t get here soon enough. Who’s ready to go? 🎣🔥

Long time ago the first tuna came over the rail

This was my first bluefin. (Don’t judge the belt placement, I had no idea of where it should go)

I had spent a season and a half chasing them with nothing to show for it. We saw fish, marked fish… just couldn’t connect. Looking back, I was impatient, rigged wrong, and always chasing the “next best thing” instead of dialing in what actually worked.

This fish was 65” and took me just over an hour to land—way longer than it should have. But at the time, I didn’t know any better. It was my first.

Even now, after all these years, I’m still learning and evolving every season.

That’s exactly why I started Bluefin Plus.
