The table may be messy when a 1:1 session ends but what happened here was anything but β€œjust art.”

In this space, a youth may have:

✨ Identified and expressed feelings
✨ Practiced a coping or self-regulation tool
✨ Worked through frustration
✨ Built confidence through trying and creating
✨ Practiced problem-solving and patience
✨ Opened up in a way that felt comfortable for them
✨ Felt seen, heard and supported

Then comes my part; the cleanup.

β€’ The scraps get thrown away.
β€’ The supplies get put back.
β€’ The table gets wiped clean.
... But the growth does not get cleaned away.

They take it with them ~ into their home, their relationships, their challenges and the person they are becoming.

At Kreate What U Want, we may use art and creativity as part of the process but the real creation is happening within.

More than art. More than a session. Tools and growth they can carry beyond this table.

What if we taught kids to cross out the words that tear them down and replace them with words that build them up?

Today I wrapped up my 3-week tween virtual Confidence-Building Workshop and one of the things we explored was the difference between negative and positive self-talk.

We talked about how the words we repeatedly tell ourselves can impact how we feel, how we see ourselves and how we approach challenges.

Then we practiced changing the narrative. This is what I shared examples:

❌ Stupid β†’ Smart
❌ Anxious β†’ Calm
❌ Hate β†’ Love
❌ War β†’ Peace
❌ Work β†’ Passion
❌ Lonely β†’ Supported
❌ Ugly β†’ Beautiful
❌ Closed off β†’ Open

β™₯︎ Having a battle and war within, we can transform that into peace within.
β™₯︎ Work can be transformed into doing what we are passionate about so it does not have to feel like "work."
β™₯︎ Sometimes we can feel lonely inside but to remind ourseleves of fhe people who are supportive of us can be soothing.
β™₯︎ There is always something beautiful to focus on, even in the "ugly"

Confidence is not only about feeling good about yourself... It is also about learning to notice the voice inside your head and practicing a kinder, more supportive one.

Through art, conversation, mindfulness, and creative activities, we spent these three weeks building self-awareness, practicing positive self-talk, self-love and giving each participant tools they can continue using beyond the workshop.

The workshop provides tools, self-expression prompts, self-reflective activities, education, a place to connect, create, feel seen, heard and supported.

Parent Tip: Start the Morning With Connection~

Before jumping into β€œGet dressed,” β€œBrush your teeth,” β€œHurry up!” try giving your youth a small moment of connection first:

β™₯︎ A hug.
β™₯︎ A smile.
β™₯︎ A silly song.
β™₯︎ A simple, β€œI am happy to see you this morning.”
β™₯︎ Saying a positive sentence: Today is a good day!

Even 30-60 seconds of positive connection can help set a calmer tone before the demands of the day begin.

When you do need to give directions, try shifting the language:

✨ Instead of: β€œHurry up, we are going to be late!”
Try: β€œLet’s see if we can get ready together and have a smooth start.”

✨ Instead of: β€œHow many times do I have to tell you?”
Try: β€œWhat is the next thing you need to do?”

The goal is not a perfect morning. It is creating little moments of calm, connection and encouragement; even when mornings are busy.

Kreate What U Want

They may leave Kreate What U Want holding a finished creation but they are taking home so much more....

While creating this headband with gems and rubber bands, there were opportunities to practice patience, make choices, problem-solve, express feelings, work through frustration and experience that feeling of, β€œI did it!”

They leave with more than art. They leave with:

✨ Confidence
✨ A sense of accomplishment
✨ Tools to navigate big emotions
✨ Stronger problem-solving skills
✨ Self-expression
✨ Pride in themselves
✨ The experience of feeling seen, heard & supported

Sometimes the biggest growth happens while their hands are busy creating.

At Kreate What U Want, the art is part of the process ~ the skills and confidence they carry into everyday life are the bigger picture.

A question that pops up for parents often during a free consultation call:

Does my youth get to create freely or do you guide them through the art projects?

The answer is… both!

It all depends on the individual.

Some youth come into a 1:1 session knowing exactly what they want to create and benefit from having the freedom to follow their own ideas.

Others feel more comfortable with a creative prompt, an idea to get them started or step-by-step guidance.

I meet each individual where they are.

I always have an activity or prompt prepared for every session but that does not mean we have to use it. Sometimes a completely different creative direction is exactly what that youth needs that day.

I also always have a large array of materials available for them to explore and experiment.

No matter what they choose to create, we can use the process to support things like emotional expression, confidence, problem-solving, frustration tolerance, mindfulness, communication and self-regulation.

1:1 sessions are all about the process and seeing what comes up along the way....

The art is a tool. The individual and what they need in that moment comes first.

The art materials may stay behind but what a child takes home can be so much more.

During this 1:1 session, we worked on identifying and putting words to feelings, while also practicing a tool they can use when those feelings feel big. We made progress not only in recognizing emotions but in learning what they can DO with them.

Through creativity, conversation and mindfulness, kids can leave feeling:

✨ Seen, heard &supported
✨ More confident in expressing themselves
✨ Proud and accomplished
✨ More aware of their feelings
✨ Equipped with tools to navigate big emotions
✨ More willing to problem-solve and keep going
✨ Reminded that their thoughts, feelings & ideas matter

The art is part of the process but there is so much happening along the way.

The art may stay behind but the confidence, emotional awareness, coping tools and sense of accomplishment get to go home with them.

Mindfulness does not always have to mean sitting still.

Sometimes it looks like hitting a balloon back and forth, laughing, moving and staying focused on what is happening right NOW.

Something this simple can support:

✨ Focus & concentration
✨ Being present
✨ Body awareness & coordination
✨ Patience & frustration tolerance
✨ Movement and energy release
✨ Connection & joy

And there was another reason I brought balloons into session ~I remembered that my client asked me for one.

Those little details matter.

When we remember what a child shares, follow their interests and intentionally bring those things into their space, we are communicating:

β€œI hear you. I see you. What matters to you matters here.”

Sometimes the simplest activities can create meaningful opportunities for connection, regulation and growth.

This week I am welcoming back THREE youth 1:1 clients I have not seen since before summer.

What makes moments like this so meaningful is knowing that after working together for some time, taking a break, growing and experiencing life outside of our sessions ~ they chose to come back.

To me, returning is a reminder of the trust, connection and safe space that has been built over time.

We do not simply pick up where we left off ~ We reconnect with who they are NOW: what has changed, what they have learned about themselves, what feels harder, what feels easier and where they may need support in this new season.

It is a privilege to be someone they choose to return to and continue growing alongside.

Welcome back!! I am so happy to continue supporting your journey.

πŸŽƒ It may look like we are just creating a pumpkin but there is so much more happening along the way.

Using construction paper, tape, mosaic pieces and scissors can support:

✨ Patience & slowing down
✨ Fine motor skills & hand-eye coordination
✨ Sensory exploration
✨ Focus & concentration
✨ Frustration tolerance
✨ Planning & decision-making
✨ Creativity & self-expression
✨ Confidence through completing each step

Creative activities give kids opportunities to practice important everyday skills while making something that feels fun and uniquely theirs.

Sometimes the process is just as valuable as the finished piece.
