I am a college-degreed Accountant with a previous career ranging (in the beginning) from Staff Accountant to CFO, Consulting with specialties in 501-C-3 Non-Profit Org. Long since retired from Accounting, however, I began a career in Tai Chi Chuan, in 1990, between changing careers, I worked in the casinos, while studing with Grand Master Charles Fran Farrell after having neglected a very serious windsurfing injury for two years! UPON FINDING OUT AT THE HOSPITAL, I HAD 4 DAYS TO LIVE
- they put me on something that kept me alive a couple of days until an operating room was available! After successful surgery and 4 months of rehab-insurance stopped! I wasn't fully recovered until I searched and found other means of recovering and restoring my life! That's when I discovered Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong! I mastered Great Grand Master William CC Chen's Tai Chi Chuan along with his Sword, and his Pushing hands, as well as Professor Chen Man Ching's Tai Chi Chuan and his sword! I would like to note that when I state I mastered Tai Chi Chuan, it includes all internal alchemy, not just the body mechanics, I've kept up to date with Great Grandmaster William CC Chen's latest workshops! I studied with Great Grand Master William CC Chen's 1995 World Heavyweight Push Hands Champion Charles 'Fran' Farrell (Note! I mean really trained 7 hrs a day- 7 days a week for over 10 years, and continued for many years after, including having to stand for 1-3 hours in Tai Chi Chuan postures and postures of other internal systems daily
until his passing recently in 2018! GrandMaster Farrell had an 8th-degree black belt in Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate, and Fran was a Shaolin Master! My Master Farrell had studied in China, at the famous Xi Yuan Hospital with Dr. Xu
Hong Tao, Medical Director of the Qigong Dept. and Dr. Liu Guanjun, Chairman Qigong Dept, both personally, and was Internationally Certified from that hospital, and came back to the USA and taught me everything he was taught there!! I continued training with Grand Master Farrell until his passing in 2018! Fortunately, he and I co-hosted a highly successful TV show for 2 years, live 3 days a week teaching Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong. I also further developed my abilities and expertise in Medical Qigong, Yichuan, Wuji (the Martial Art) and reached what some people say is the highest level in Martial Arts and Qigong--Ling Kong Jing! I teach group lessons, corporate wellness programs, and private lessons, alternative energy healing ranging from stress, pain, COPD, PTSD AHDD, Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Cancer to the removal of cysts! As of this edit, I have 36years of Medical Qigong experience and in the previously mentioned Martial Arts! As of this edit on 09/21/2025, I still train, personally, 2-3 hrs daily! Although many people refer to me as Master, I don't consider myself that because I am a student for life, of discovering something today, that wasn't there yesterday! Being a Master-Is just the beginning!

Looks just like Golden Pheasant Stands on One Leg. I have been teaching this application of the technique for years.

Long before Bruce Lee became a global martial arts icon, Hawkins Cheung knew him as a schoolmate, friend and training partner in 1950s Hong Kong.

Cheung began learning Wing Chun under Ip Man in 1953 and trained alongside Bruce during their younger years. According to Hawkins' own accounts, the two were intensely competitive. They practiced together, exchanged ideas and sometimes tested what they were learning against each other.

Their circle also included some major names in Wing Chun history. Hawkins described senior practitioners such as Wong Shun Leung and William Cheung as important influences during those formative years.

Eventually their lives took them in different directions. Bruce moved to the United States, while Hawkins went to Australia. But they remained in contact and continued exchanging ideas about martial arts as Bruce's own approach evolved.

Hawkins' story didn't end as simply “Bruce Lee's friend.” He continued developing his martial arts, eventually moving to Los Angeles and becoming a respected Wing Chun instructor in his own right.

History tends to remember its biggest stars. But sometimes the people who trained beside them have fascinating stories of their own.

Let's give Hawkins Cheung his flowers.🌹

Did you know about Hawkins Cheung before today? What other underrated Wing Chun figure should we feature next?

I started practicing Tai Chi when I was 30 and still an avid power lifter because I wanted an exercise I could still be doing at 80. Almost 60; so far so good.

Why Do Some People Practice Taijiquan for Life?

The best exercise may not be the one shown to provide benefits in a clinical trial. It may be the one you are still practicing years later.

A recent study in "Frontiers in Psychology" looked at why older adults continue practicing Taijiquan. The study was small, involving only 16 participants, so its findings are exploratory. Still, the results are interesting because they focus on something often overlooked in exercise research: "long-term commitment". Benefits come from continuous movement, even if they appear small.

Researchers identified several factors that may help people stay with Taijiquan, including appropriate practice content, instructor support, encouragement from fellow students, personal motivation, and simple ways of tracking progress.

For many practitioners, this probably sounds familiar. People may begin Taijiquan because they want better balance, less stiffness, stress reduction, or a gentle form of exercise. But if they continue, their reasons often change.

New feelings appear within movements that seemed simple at first. Practice can gradually become part of daily life rather than something done only to reach a particular health goal.

This is one of the important differences between Taijiquan or Qigong and a short-term workout program. Learning the movements is only the beginning. There is always another layer of balance, coordination, relaxation, breathing, attention, or body awareness to explore.

A lesson for instructors: We need people to begin practicing, but keeping them practicing may be even more important.
