Ricky Rudd won the 1997 Miller 500 at Dover Motor Speedway on June 1, 1997, marking the final 500-mile NASCAR Winston Cup race held at the track. The closing laps of the grueling, attrition-filled event came down to a thrilling battle between two of the cleanest, most respected drivers on the track: Ricky Rudd and Mark Martin. As Rudd battled a slipping race car in the final laps, a charging Mark Martin caught his back bumper but raced him with absolute class and clean respect. Refusing to use his bumper to dump or move the leader, Martin gave Rudd room to race, resulting in a magnificent, razor-thin finish. Rudd held him off by a mere 0.091 seconds to capture his 18th career NASCAR Cup Series victory

On September 21, 1997, Mark Martin won the MBNA 400 at Dover Motor Speedway, driving the No. 6 Valvoline Ford for team owner Jack Roush. The victory was famously decided by fuel strategy. Kyle Petty had the dominant car of the day, leading 191 laps. However, a rare single caution for just 11 laps allowed Roush and Martin to stretch their mileage, making only three pit stops compared to Petty's four. This was his 22nd career NASCAR Cup Series win.
