Bears Open 2026 Season with Fifth-Place Finish at Trinity Invitational

HARTFORD, Conn. — The Smith College cross country team opened its 2026 season on Saturday with a fifth-place finish out of 11 teams at the Trinity Invitational, scoring 142 points in a 5,000-meter race that drew 138 finishers.

A balanced offensive attack from the Smith College field hockey team powered the Bears to a 7-1 win over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon.

Smith (2-3) dominated all facets of the game with 50 shots on goal and 27 corners. First year Megan O'Connor scored twice, while Molly van Brunschot and Sam Sparling each recorded their first career goals.

Bears sweep day one at Rochester Invitational to move to 6-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Smith College went 2-0 on the opening day of the Rochester Invitational on Friday at the Louis Alexander Palestra, outlasting Clarkson University 3-2 in a five-set afternoon match and knocking off host University of Rochester 3-1 at night. The Bears are 6-0 to open the season.

Lila Gilmer has been named an assistant coach with the cross country program, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jack Wood announced.

"From the moment she stepped on campus, it was clear Lila was the perfect addition to our staff," said Wood. "Beyond her experience competing on national qualifying teams and coaching a top high school program, she connects with our athletes and already inspires them every day. She brings a fierce authenticity and drive that brings out the best in everyone around her, and we can't wait to see what we build together this season."

NORTHAMPTON - Lila Gilmer has been named an assistant coach with the cross country program, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jack Wood announced. Gilmer will be pursuing her masters of exercise and sport studies over the next two years, while assisting with all aspects of the program.

Smith College rowing head coach Meg Conan announced the addition of Rose Carr as an assistant coach for the program heading into the 2026-27 campaign. Carr brings extensive coaching experience at the collegiate and junior levels, along with a distinguished background as a competitive rower.

"We are incredibly excited to welcome Rose Carr to our coaching staff," said Conan. "Her passion for the sport, combined with her previous coaching experience at both the collegiate and junior levels, makes her a great fit for our boathouse. Rose possesses a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest levels of rowing, having earned a World Championship bronze medal with the U.S. Junior National Team and competed as Division I student-athlete at Ohio State. She brings a strong work ethic, a team-first attitude, and a belief in the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity college athletics provides for our student-athletes to develop into the people they want to be. I look forward to working together to help our student-athletes reach their full potential both on the water and in the classroom and to pursue competitive excellence as a team."

Smith swimming and diving head coach Caleb Potvin has added diving coach Joel Bierwert and assistant swim coach Elle Immel to his coaching staff.

"We're super excited to welcome Coach Elle and Coach B to our staff," said Potvin. "We know they're going to have a tremendously positive impact on our team. Coach Elle brings a great sport psychological background and lens to our team that aligns closely with our process and effort driven approach. Coach B adds to that and brings a wealth of successful experience and will have an unmatched passion for coaching Smith divers."
