CLA Drill: Connect to the Legs, then the Hips

He wouldn’t tap because “it wasn’t really a move.”
Two of my students were rolling the other day in Half Guard. The top player was applying brutal shoulder pressure to the bottom player's jaw and neck.
The bottom player’s face was red. He was in agony.
He eventually moved on to a different position.
After the round ended, he said that he was thinking about tapping but “it wasn’t really a move.”
I thought that was pretty funny. 😅
It can be useful to break down Jiu Jitsu into individual moves, but don’t forget about the bigger picture.
Sometimes, you don’t need “a move.” You need to destabilize your opponent and find a way to unpin yourself.
And sometimes you need to tap, so you don’t break your jaw. Even if it isn’t “a move” you can identify.
Don’t miss the forest for the trees.
Back in 2004, Kimbo Slice was a larger-than-life mythological monster.
He was the hottest thing in fighting sports.
A rumor started that he was coming to the Boston area to fight local fighter Sean Gannon.
Sean had watched Kimbo’s fights and saw some openings to beat this monster.
Kimbo fans unfamiliar with Gannon scoffed at his chances.
There was no YouTube, no Instagram, no Twitter back then. There were online forums, though. The most popular one was called the Underground.
Some people started posting on the Underground that the fight was on at a secret location. They also said they would post a link to the video of the fight.
You have to understand that there was more trolling than posting back then. A typical troll move would be to post a link to a video. When clicked on, it would take you to a video of Rick Ashley singing “I’m Never Gonna Give You Up”.
This was called being “Rick Rolled”.
I don’t know if that is still a thing.
When the Kimbo-Gannon fight posters kept saying that they needed just a little more time to process the video, I was skeptical.
They finally posted the link. As I was about to click it, I was sure I was about to be Rick Rolled.
When the video popped up, I saw Sean Gannon putting in his mouthpiece and walking towards Kimbo.
I was shocked.
It was an amazing fight. One for the ages.
