Nyssa Boys Second, Vale’s Fritts First At Nyssa Invitational (Full results for Nyssa, Burns, Four Rivers, Vale, Ontario)

NYSSA – When a full bus arrives from an Idaho school, you know the race will be large. That is exactly what occurred as Meridian, Idaho pulled up at the Nyssa Invitational on Wednesday, Sept. 9 along with 17 additional teams.

The host Bulldog boys held their own against the larger Idaho team with Nyssa placing second in the team scores. Nyssa junior Pedro Santana placed second in the 5,000 meters, running his season best time of 17 minutes, 2.94 seconds to lead the Dawgs.

The Hilander team of Burns/Crane cracked the top five with their 165 points fifth in the team standings. Burns/Crane senior Thaddius Downs did one spot better than the team, finishing fourth on the course full of turns in just over 18 minutes by 6/100th of a second.

The Four Rivers boys, bolstered by the school’s largest team in memory, picked up eighth in the team points led by senior Alan Maxfield-Okuda’s finish of 27th and his time of 19:33.06.

One spot back of the Falcons was the Vale boys with senior Duncan Fritts taking home the medal as the individual champion. Fritts was the lone runner of the day under the 17-minute mark, finishing in 16:41.38 for the win.

Ontario picked up 13th in the team scores with sophomore Luke Seebart leading the charge in 49th with a time of 20:46.50.

Nyssa Freshman Grabs Third At Home Race (Full results for Nyssa, Vale, Burns, Four Rivers, Ontario)

NYSSA – Cross country is an odd sport for EOS. Just when we believe we know the runners to watch come a new season, a freshman pops up to make EOS look foolish (we fondly remember the first race of Pine Eagle’s, now La Grande’s Lindsey Brown). As Nyssa freshman Payton Hartley was not present for the Vale Dash N’ Splash, the Nyssa Invite on Wednesday, Sept. 9 was the first look at the Bulldog runner. Behind two Idaho runners, Hartley showed the future for Nyssa after crossing the line in third, posting a time of 21 minutes, 40 seconds. Her finish helped the Nyssa team to a fourth place showing in the team scores, the best finish for Oregon schools.

The Vale girls, led by junior Eden Galkowski’s 41st place finish and a time of 26:57.47, were one spot behind the Bulldogs as the Viking’s 168 points were fifth.

Both Burns and Four Rivers managed top 10 team finishes with the Hilanders placing seventh and the Falcons eighth.

Burns junior Hadley Gunderson slid into a top 20 finish, claiming 19th with a time of 23:41.69. Falcon sophomore Millie Young was a top 40 finisher, taking 39th with a time of 26:46.24.

Ontario was a few runners short of a team score but was led by Tiger junior Shayla Macucha’s finish of 78th.
