Saturday, August 29 started with a rain shower- this TROPICAL rainshower was the prelude to the Oak Harbor Yacht Club’s luau!
Chairpersons Suzie DuPuis and Lori Rhodenbaugh organized this fun, sold out event which included Hawaiian fare, music by Aloha Danny and a journey of love and resilience by Whidbey Island’s very own Hawaiian dance group- Da Island Girls!
The Hawaiian fare of Kalua pork, Mac Salad Hawaiian style, lomi salmon, spam musubi, fried won tons, tropical fruit platter, chicken longrice was lovingly prepared by our social committee members- Ryan Bradley, Denise and Wyatt Hedrick, Kathy Jones, JJ Jones, Bruce Brown, and Shelley Johnson.
Da Island Girls- Malia, Alofa and Heather shared their lively dancing with a special performance that celebrates family, resilience and the deep bonds of sisterhood. After the meal and dancing, Malia and Alofa judged the dessert contest with the winner the Chocolate Haupia pie with the Pineapple Upside down cake coming in a close second.
Hula hooping came next with one young guest winning the longest hula hooping and, another guest, Sheila, surprising us by hula hooping around her neck! Wow!
Many guests took advantage of ordering the fresh flower leis that were flown in from Hawaii. Thanks to Suzie DuPuis for coordinating this effort (that turned out to be more challenging than expected- ask her about it.
We would like to thank all who came end supported the Oak Harbor Yacht Club with their friendly vibes. And, extra special mahalo to the committee members that worked so hard to make this a very successful event- Kate Erb, Kjirsten Grove- last minute coordination of the dessert tasting was impressive, Shelly Johnson, Kathy Jones, Denise and Wyatt Hedrick, Ryan Bradley.
