In association with the NorCal Spinal Injury Association, Archer Bicycle is hosting a Wheelchair Repair Clinic! This is the first of what I hope will be many clinics here at Archer Bicycle.
If you want to reserve a spot for work on your chair, sign up soon. I’m thinking it will fill up quickly.

A major stumbling block for many wheelchair users is that most places that do work on wheelchairs bill all their work through insurance. This means that all service and repairs must be pre-approved by the insurance company before any work can be done. This can mean that the wheelchair user may need to wait weeks or even months for simple repairs on their chair. This clinic should help address a small part of this problem
For those of you who don’t know, most bike shops don’t work on wheelchairs. I’m one of the few who do. There are some fairly significant differences between wheelchairs and bicycles, but there are obvious similarities. For a bike shop, this means that they have to be willing to take on some challenges and be willing to finish any work on a wheelchair a very short period of time. You are working on the thing that allows this customer to live their life! The work has to be done quickly and well; their life truly depends on it!

A customer dropped off this bike rack / storage shelf with the request that I find it a good home. The shelf has two hooks on the underside for hanging a helmet or other items. If you could use it, it’s yours! No charge!
The storage rack needs to be mounted to something secure (use toggle bolts in drywall).

You might wonder why my cat is on the Archer Bicycle page. Well, the cat tower/ scratching post that she’s sitting on was made from the boxes in which I get condoms. Every Friday I walk a circuit of bars and nightclubs here in downtown Oakland and stock them with condoms for their patrons. I give out about 1000 condoms a week. The cat tower represents one and a quarter years of condoms (65 boxes, 1000 condoms per box), it also goes to show the lengths I will go to for my cat.

This placard was given to me by a friend and former co-worker at my shop in Sacramento during the second Gulf war. It was hung behind the register where everyone who came in would see. It’s back up (unfortunately).

Christmas is a time of giving, but I was reminded by my old friend Mr. Scrooge that we should strive to keep Christmas in our hearts the year round. It’s never the wrong time to lessen the burdens of others. I have to say, if you’d met Mr. Scrooge in the years before that fateful Christmas day, you would have thought he was a jerk; and you would have been right. But if you met him now, you would never guess what a jerk he was. That’s not to say that the old Scrooge doesn’t peek out every now and then, but I’m amazed how much he has changed. And as Tiny Tim said, “God bless us everyone.”
